LCD Vs CRT

  Clio 197
I've got a 19" IIyama (entry-level) CRT.

I want an LCD screen... will a 17" be the same size, or should I go for 19"?

I'm not sure how it's all measured.

Oms. :)

LCD screens tend to be taller and more square that CRT monitors, my 17" Hitachi LCD is about the same size as a 19" CRT. They are all measured diagonally as far as I know, look for an LCD or TFT with a low response time (10-15ms or less) to keep blurring of moving images to a minimum. I've never looked back and I used to have a 17" IIyama.

All measured diagonally still, but with the LCD what you see is what you get, dont lose any viewing area like you do with CRT.

A 17 inch LCD will give you more viewing area than a 17 inch CRT.

Still not sure that LCD is as good for Photoshop work as a good CRT is. The Apple LCD on my Macbook is still not in the same league as my 21 CRT for colour, but is a damn site sharper and crisper.

17" and 19" TFT's will display the same resolution - everything will just be bigger on the 19".

17"/19" == 1280x1024
20.1"+ is where the resolution will goto 1600x1200 normally.

So 17" or 20.1"+ really..

i've just come back from CeBIT and was on the Samsung stand and their new range of LCD's coming out are amazing, they are using blue LED and the difference is such a contrast to a normal tft.

Someone above mentioned the photoshop thing and the manufacturers now recognise this and with the new blue LED monitors from Samsung they have a Photoshop mode to give a true representation of what the image is.

These might be worth waiting for if you use photoshop.

THey also had monitors that run off cat 5 and are connected to the network to send pictures down them do you can administer from anywhere!

Nice one Dave.

I'll hang-on for a month or so...

My current 19" monitor is SH*TE! I've got brightness & contrast set to Max, and it's still not bright enough!

i think sony have the led ones out soon too, samsung were telling me that they were expecting them to come out at about the same price as standard lcd's as the led will take over, the colour was amazing though, and the response was something ridiculous like 2 ms!

they were saying something like the colour on a normal lcd was 70-90% (normally 2 back lights, 1 top and 1 bottom) but the led has loads of coverage all over the display and thus has 103% colour i think, very interesting to see in action anyway, just not sure when they are launched.

For a long time, CRTs whooped the ass of TFTs. I've still got a 19" Iiyama CRT at home, but use a 17" TFT at work. Things have moved on considerably now and TFTs aren't just a cosmetic I-Want-I-Want Toy - they are a genuine and often superior alternative.

As much as I like my CRT, my next monitor will definitely be a TFT.

My only problem with TFT's is im used to 1600x1200+ resolutions and to get wht i want in a TFT is stupidly expensive or i could get a 21" CRT for £300 which does the same job with better colours / higher res than an £800 TFT.

And i can still see ghosting on nearly all the ones i looked at.

Not quite the same thing, but I'm thinking I might get one of these for my 360: http://www.samsung.com/Products/TV/SlimFitHDTV/TXR3080WHXXAA.asp

I've got a Samsung 913BF at home and have been really impressed with it.
that is supposed to have a better picture than a tft, was also supposed to be on samsungs stand at CeBIT yesterday but i didn't see it?

these are very big in the USA, HD CRT's, they are more popular than lcd's at the mo.

I'm not a massive LCD fan, I hate the fact that the picture isn't as good as a CRT, so the ability to have a HD CRT which isn't so thick, and won't cost a fortune is perfect.

We've got a 42" Panasonic Series 7 Plasma in the office which cost £2,500 when we bought it, and that's very impressive, the Samsung 26" HD screens people have on their desks are good but no where near as clear or crisp, and they do suffer a little ghosting. MS recommended them for colour balancing though.
