Leaking Power steering pipe

  172
There is a leak that is getting a lot worse that's coming from the powersteering.. It looks like it's coming from near the steering rack so i'm assuming it's the high pressure hose. I've been told this is silly money to fix, are there any other solutions to fix it as i'm not paying £180 for a hose.

Cheers.

if it's coming from the union, it could just be loose, or need a new 'o' ring. worth being sure if it's the union or the pipe first anyway (it's not easy to get at the union BTW, and the nut's alloy, so need to be careful with it)

dont drive it unless you have to, the power steering pump may seize, mine did

as has been said best best is pirtek or try steve79 (i think) on here, he breaks clio's and i got my replacement off him, top service

ps hoses are 180 and 220 +vat

a pump depending on the model is £100 - £200+

if you have a phase one i have a high pressure hose in my garage, bought it for my cup but they changed it so wont fit mine

I'm just removing my power steering from the Trophy, i had a similar problem a few months ago and fitted a brand new pressure hose from Renault (managed to get it for £200) as i won't be needing it, i'm prepared to sell it, just make me a sensible offer, i'm in sheffield Btw

ps in the meantime you can fit a shorter aux belt to bypass the PAS pump, beware of heavy steering though lol!!

Cheers for the replies.

My mechanic said one of the pipes was weeping last time he saw it and he tried to crimp it so I'm assuming it's the pipe its self!

I've just been topping it up but it empties at an alarming rate! I have a ph2 Tooney but i'll try Chris first before going to Pirtek.

thanks.

PS. do I have to take the hose off to get one made up? Does anyone know the fitting and required length i'd need?

Thanks,

Okay cool just make sure that you check the hose (if you get a genuine reno one) as they are diff across the models you will need to check

ie my 172 cup one is different from the normal 172, god knows why!!! so make sure you double check!!! my ph1 may be compatible with yours will need to check!

good luck with it anyway

Thanks mate, How will I know if the ph1 is compatible, will a picture do? I'll have to get under the car tomorrow and get a picture or a part number.

The cheaper the better :)

Dont get it from Renault!

It will be on back order for at least two weeks!

Left me high and dry when my pipe went :(

I am running a Pirtek pipe on my car , as is a friend (msisleman)

Take the ends into pirtek and get them to make up a new pipe. Best way is under the sump , approx 900-1000mm in length , but measure it up yourself

Is there any way to sort this without taking the ends in as I need a car to travel to Pirtek which is about 15miles away.

Oh my god, very bad news.. I've just taking it to Kwik Fit (that's not the worst of it) to get it up on the ramps and the leak is coming from the rack its self!! Near the drivers side gaiter area. They said a seal will have gone and the gaiter will be filling up and when I turn it will squeeze the fluid out :(

What are my options now? Certainly can't afford a new rack at this time!

Can get a rack for anything up £80 , go to partsgateway.

In fact I bought one today for £57 from cit-ren.

It's cheaper than the pipe , and almost easier to fit, so I would consider that a result ;)

The bloke said you needed to drop the subframe to get the rack out!

It doesn't look easy anyway.

Is it possible the gaiter is just leaking and needs replacing or is there a seal that does actually go?

I keep getting oil appearing on my drivers side driveshaft and it looks like there might be oil coming from one of the pas pipes as it looks a bit wet.

I bought a rack from Cit-ren for £60 and my mechanic got the rack off today and has just informed me it was the pipe on the rack grrrr. So i've bought a rack for nothing and now I need a new pipe.

I've told the mechanic about Pirtek but he says unless it's a properly fitted pipe it will be very hard to get on. I honestly don't want to pay £180 for a pipe so has anyone fitted a Pirtek one? How difficult was it?

I seem to have this problem too. What did you do?

My high pressure PAS pipe failed on mine over the summer. I forked out for a genuine Renault replacement, looked at how difficult the job was to do and then took the car to the local garage to swap it for me. All in was shy of £500 to fix. The guy in the garage said he had to take the subframe off to replace it, but investigating on here before I took it to the garage it is possible to do without removing the subframe. Either way it is a pig of a job.
If you know an "old shool" mechanic they may be able to make up a pipe using some flaring/crimping tool etc they will have kicking about in their garage, I am sure this wont cost Renault prices for the hose.
