legal tyre depth

  extreme flamer
I just purchased a part worn tyre which wasn't a very good purchase tbh, am I right in thinking that the little bumps in between the tread pattern is the legal limit?

1.6mm, but i'd say any tyre under 3mm should be changed as they're no longer performing properly
or displacing enough water on a rainy day.

I've got it sorted now, the guy is going to replace it since he's realised his employees are idiots that don't pay attention to what they're fitting. don't think I'll be using him again as I also think hes lying to me about tyre sizes

  extreme flamer
What's he saying?
Because he didn't have any 185/55/15s hes fitted a 195/50/15 which he says is fine but on the black circles website it says the only suitable tyres for my car are 185/55/15 for a 15 inch alloy

  extreme flamer
I thought that tbh, he said as its only 5mm diffrence it would look the same and I wouldn't get any bother with it.
Am I right in thinking that if I was to have a crash with the wrong size of tyre on my wheel that it would invalidate my insurance and what he's fitted is just plain stupid/illegal?
Safe to say once this is sorted the guys never making another penny from me.

So he is criticising his employees, but at the same time knowingly fitting an illegal tyre to your car.

I would just be asking for a full refund from this cowboy then be reporting him to trading standards tbh

law is 1.6mm across the central 3/4's of the tyres

tyres on the same axle (i.e front left & front right, OR, Rear left & rear right) MUST match.

police could easily give you greif for it and insurance would use it as leverage in event of an accident!! and itll fail an MOT.

always play by the rules when it comes to tyres. its not worth it!

Can't see that happening, I just want it sorted with the correct size of tyre for my car then I'll never be in the guys shop again

So if I'd came home and fitted the wheel to my car I'd pretty much be making it illegal/an MOT failure? Am I right in thinking it's worth 3 points aswell?

As stated the legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the tyre but grip is significantly reduced when the tread is below 3mm. The small bumps (or tread wear indicators to give them their proper title) are as the name suggests only indicators and are roughly 1.7-1.9mm in height depending on brand. All the tyre manufactures recommend to change at 3mm. Though if there is any (and I mean any) wire or thread showing anywhere on the tyre it's illegal. Also any large chunks of rubber missing (from kerbing) or excessive cracks in the side walls will also render the tyre illegal.

The laws for motorbikes, scooters, mopeds, trucks and busses are completely different.

A defective tyre is 3 points on your licence and a £60 fine for every defective tyres. 4 defective tyres is driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition and you will end up in court (technically a cop can only issue 1 enforceable ticket at the roadside at any one time so you should go to court for two defective tyres). Also with 4 defective tyres you'll probably have your car taken by the police, possibly directly to a MoT test garage. (I know the law is slightly different here in Northern Ireland but the basics are the same).

Cheers for any info given, going to either get the right tyre with atleast 4mm tread or a full refund tomorrow.
Its starting to really annoy me, part worn tyre with around 1mm or less till the legal limit and to top it off its not even the correct size for my car which would invalidate my insurance if I had a crash, cnut shouldn't be allowed to put people at risk like that, what does it actually take to report him to trading standards geordie? Just a phonecall?

Not sure tbh, but i imaginr its probably that easy, possibly an online form or one they send or go through with you.

Just give them all the info as you have said here. Alone it may not achieve anything, but it will certainly be recorded, and I imagine if they have had othet reports etc, then they probably take action.

How does this affect people who have a space saver spare for example?

Genuine questions as have 205's on the 182 and a spare rim with a 195 in the boot.

My focus st (about to change to Clio RS 200) runs 225/40R 18 on a daily basis and the spare is a 155/70R 16.

Forgot to ask why the part worns? You can get brand new Toyo Proxes T1Rs for £47.50 each from Camskill. They as a new tyre will have about 8mm of tread (so 6.5mm useable) compared to a £20 part worn with 4mm of tread (2.5 mm useable). They work out around the same per mm and you have a brand new tyre. You can get cheaper tyres but the Proxes were the cheapest tyre I'd use (tyres in your size start around £36each).

Space savers are for temporary use, marked up as this and have a speed restriction. Normally have a 50mph limit and a 50mile limit (per each use)

You can go on your council's website and look it up. You can email them...or phone them. If they're anything like Trading Standards where I am...I wouldnt like to piss them off...Just make sure that you have all the evidence you can...as that will help them enforce prosecution if they've had previous dealings.

I'm assuming from your profile that you are under Glasgow Council....if so...check here

A quote from Trading Standards web site

By law,t is illegal to supply a part-worn tyre that is capable of being fitted to a motor vehicle or trailer unless certain conditions are met regarding specific markings and the general condition of the tyre.

Most importantly, all types of part-worn tyre must be marked 'PART WORN', any repairs to tyres must comply with British Standards, and it is illegal to have unsafe tyres in possession for sale.

I remember reading that approx 90% of part worn tyres sold in the UK don't meet the standards required by law.

TBH I'm just sick of throwing money at the little french tin, I've probably spent well over a grand in the last year just to keep it on the road and I've just lost all interest now.(plus I just spent nearly £300 in December for tyres all round)
As soon as I get a solid job and save a few grand I want rid for something non french so I don't want to be spending alot of money on it really, it's a bit of a waste

Cheers Don once I get either a refund or a decent tyre from the guy I think I'll look into that.
Mines doesn't have any type of marking on it which says it is part worn and according to him the good tyres must have got mixed up with the dud ones, so he obviously keeps illegal tyres for some reason:S
