lightened flywheels-how heavy......

okay, ive been looking into this a bit, so im thinkin of getting my flywheel lightened. anyone no the standard weight of a 16v fly? also does a gt turbo flywheel fit, becus grey devil industries have shsved 50% of the weight from there gt turbo flywheels, and they are strong as hell! think they weigh about 4.5kilos. and its only 120quid. bet the 16v engine rev like buggery, tho low-speed driving wud be a bit poo

Well while I was getting the Willy gearbox in I got my flywheel done by a bloke near me £80. He took a kg off it which is about 20% of the original weight, all round the edge as well where it counts.

It does seem to rev up and down a lot quicker than before, very slightly prone to stalling when moving off from standstill, but hardly any difference there. Makes no difference low down as far as I can tell, the benefit is all up the top, eg motorway driving where I could keep up with all sorts on the M4 and M25 coming back (between 70 and !10 mph) just by dropping it into 3rd or 4th and flooring it - BMW 635, Elise, M Coupe, Audi TT 225 etc. Obviously this is with the engine screaming at 6500-7000 revs!

what happens if too much is taken off and i breaks? will it break at the worst time and cause loads of damage?

you mean if it throws itself off the crank?

itll bust your gearbox casings at least, probably more more.

Well if the flywheel shatters, its gonna be pretty bad news. I suppose in a worst case scenario it might even bust the casing and through the bulkhead, theres a lot of energy in there.

So dont go too mad on shaving weight. Find a specialist and try to talk with them about where they are gonna take the weight off, round the edges will have the most effect but you have to be careful not to take off the teeth around the edge.

you have got to take a LOT off to cause this to happen...

some flywheels are feather light and are fine...

I have recently heard of a standard one sheering the bolts from being dropped into 2nd gear at over 120 mph instead of 4th... they just dropped the clutch and bang... no damage to anything else though...

having a fylwheel shatter / break is VERY rare...
