lights cutting out

Heya got an issue that just started tonight, driving at night with main beam on and the dash lights all go off apart from main beam green light left side the dash. park up and get outside and the sidelights & tail lights are all out.

brake lights, main beam and indicators work fine.... if i turn the lights off and back on then it works fine with sidelights and tail lights working plus dash all lit up again but cuts out randomly

its a mk 1 16v HELP!

hi,

I've been having a look around and there is cover missing from the back of my drivers side head light, it seems dry but could this be causing my problems?

any ideas on where i should start to look? help appreciated
