Limited slip diff

Im looking into buying ethier a 172 cup or a teg

Ive read this forum and dc2 forum top too bottom.lol (not going to go into the differnces between a teg and cup as ive read it been done many times b4:rasp: )

My only concern i have with the cup is lack of abs and lsd

I have seen there are a few options for a lsd in the cup ,question is for all those with a lsd fitted. does the lsd help with braking any better over the standard set up

I had a Type r sti 3 years back which had no abs but did has a frount lsd braking was exceptionally good in extremer conditions even without abs, which is what gave me the thought if a lsd was in a cup

LSD aids traction under power more than braking I thought (correct me if I'm talking s**t!)

If you want an LSD I'd by the teg rather than fitting one to a Cup. Waste of time and money IMHO. Virtually unheard of to have them fitted to a Clio.

LSD basically limits the power flow from side to side. The limit is usually is set around 30/70. If you imagine half the car on tarmac and the other on grass, the car wont move as a standard diff lets torque take the easiest path. A focus RS basically drives different than a clio as you plant it and the diff on the focus pulls the car into the corner. a clio would understeer. But clios are still better :rasp: :D

oh, it only slighty affects the brakes if you downshift which you wouldnt need to with good brakes. LSD aids traction off the line and transforms handling totally. Quafe make a diff for the clio, and just because hardly anyone on clio sport does it, doesnt mean its not worth doing. Better spent on a diff than coilovers as hardly anyone on this site knows how to use fully adjustable suspension!

I agree with you there;) , how can fitting a lsd not be worth doing it must as you say aid handling. ive seen clips of a cup on youtube slight wet surface no traction surley a lsd would aid in this condition and even in the dry i would have thought would have been far better.

Has no one on here fitted a lsd to there cup then?:(

I said it was not worth doing as you can buy a Teg that has one already! Without going to the trouble/expense etc. Not to mention the Teg is arguably a better car anyway!!!

Now youve forced me into why im slighty movng away from teg speech.lol

Manly Tegs are way to overprised to get a good clean example round 50-70k mikes there way over 6-7k:eek: thats for a 98 model

A cup can be found for alot cheaper than that with less miles and later model by at least 4 years.

hence to my original question if lsd will aid in braking on a cup???

I dont think anyone has answerd the question.lol

Im not after how a lsd works on handling and traction on pul off i just want to know very simply a cup drivers experiance between before the lsd and after the lsd fitting in aiding braking under heavier, wetter conditions . meaning does it help the car in any way from locking up better/worse or nowt difference;) .

Im only after the cup model:rasp:

no it will not aid in braking the LSD only works under acceleration where one wheel loses traction and applies more power to the wheel with traction .
under braking there will not be any power applied and there for the diff will not be required so there for the LSD will not work .
but it will aid when applying the power out of a corner .

a std 172 cup Vs a teg???? 172 everytime, you don't need an LSD, i ran a 240bhp NA 172 cup with a standard box and it pretty much wasted most stuff round track

ABS is for gays

LSD isn't needed

theres a few options for diff,
quaife
avanti
and sadav

i would have the sadav diff anyday as the cup racers use sadav boxes must be a reason :D

and with our rally car on second sadav box (first 5speed dog box and now 6speed seq) we have had an avanti diff but tbh the sadav is miles ahead in terms of drivability and settings.

obviously a lsd wont let one wheel lock up if the other is turning so should help with abs as i was informed diff's had acceleration setups and decceleration setup

hutchie :D

Its the 21st centry lol. You should only be using your brakes, no more need for downshifting unless you want a MK1 Escort. I agree with Fred, slippy diffs are class, but clios are class with-out them...... buy a clio :approve:

agree, but when you take your clio rallying a lsd comes in handy :rasp:

I am interested in chucking a a bag (of sand - £1k) at my gearbox (Quaife or Gripper LSD) rather than spending another £1k on a heap of 'mods' that won't get me round any track any quicker (my ph1 has coilovers, de-cat, cat-back, itg filter, uprated pads, discs, hoses & fluid)...

Anyone wanna join me? (power in numbers - DISCOUNTS FTW) :D

what £1K to buy the diff, then what £300 to rebuild the box and £300 labour to remove/refit it plus a possible clutch change whilst you're at it

you're knocking on for £2K unless you're doing it DIY (good luck rebuilding the box if you are!)

Thats because the Teg is the better car,

Althought I couldn't live with the looks of the DC2, would have to be a DC5

Even though the clios quicker around track and performance cars magazine test track? ;)

£1,300 done, not DIY, clutch replaced 400 miles ago...

But, to be fair, my point was more that this kind of cash spend on a diff would be better than a set of cams or whatever else you could have done for the same money...

Do you agree Fred?

I have 240 bhp and toyo 888. I only spin both wheels. I was thinking about a diff but unless it's not dry i don't feel it's needed. Torque bias diff is meant to better than a normal diff cos it doesn't need setting up all the time. My last track day i wasn't spinning at all till it rained, and that was on road tyres. I'll try harder in october at the next one at raf marham

Ive had cars without abs and its not the braking from distance that bothers me , no problem and i agree better brakes from non abs in these conditions, so in this situation then yeah abs are for gays.lol

But in unexpected conditions Abs aint for gays :nono: i understand if everyone on the road knew how to drive then there woudnt be any need for it, in the real world though there is always a mong who will pull out on you while its p**sin it down what you going to do then answer... straight into mongy:rasp:

This is what i was lead to belive, out of all the posts on this thread who actually has a lsd fitted to there cup? to compare differences:cool:

I canot see a 172 would win everytime, on paper they look a even match to me

i'm not on about "on paper 0-60" i'm talking everything from fun factor etc etc

remember cup's are for men

172bagss2 - it doesn't need one, but yes i agree you either spend £x on the engine or you go for a diff

....dont forget Gripper aswell.

Just got my gearbox back last week with a gripper fitted (6 month wait :dapprove: ) - looking forward to benefitting from a bit more control over the power on trackdays.
