Little bit of advice please....

Hi guys,

I am in the process from moving over from the German scene and on the lookout for a Clio 172.

I have found one with a dealer near me that is like an electric blue, it is a 2002, has service history and is only £995.

Just wondering if this is a good price and if there is anything I should specifically look out for when I go to see it later?

Its very cheap, has he got a website / link? check all the belts have been done in the last few years, might be a bit battered for that price, steering wheels been gnawed at, needs pics of it or more info.

That price is silly cheap imo, I'd ask whether it's recorded, Cat D etc.

If its a dealer they are obliged to tell you if it's categorised, a vehicle check via the reg should clear that up. As already stated check the belts have been done (with proof), check gears engage/disinguage 'smoothly', exhaust condition, brake disk wear especially the rears, tyres etc etc

Needing a new set of tyres - £400
Needing both belt kits & dephaser - £700
Also due air filter, plugs etc - £100
Needing stainless exhaust - £200
Soon to need new discs & pads all round - £200
Nearly run out of tax - £240

The above is just routine consumables, could be loads of reasons why it's a bad buy (dodgy syncros, worn clutch, electrical problems etc).

If a dealer is selling it for £995, then think what it must owe him. And if it owes him so little, why did the previous owner PX it for so little?

Of course it could be bargain of the century. It wouldn't be difficult to get £995 back from breaking it (sounds like a 172 cup) assuming the engine/box isn't completely fubar...
