Little bit scared!!

Hi,

Just joined the forum and thought Id write my first post.

Ive just bought a 172 cup (delivery in april) and am really looking forward to getting it. It was all a bit of an impulse buy!! Id seen a lovely looking clio parked outside my local chineese and thought "Id like one". Went to a renault dealer, looking for a 172 and came away with a cup. Never heard of it before, didnt test drive it...just liked the look of it and bought it. Reading up on it here and on other websites, I now realise I,ve bought a flying machine.

Never had a fast car before. My previous cars have beeen a 1L golf, a 1.3 escort and a 1.3 mini. My question to the forum is..."am I going to splat myself?". As the title to this topic indicates, Im a bit aprehensive that Ill get carried away with all my new power. Its going to be great fun tho.

Have any other members gone from a crap car to a cup? If so Id like to hear about your first impressions.

Have really enjoyed reading all the discussions on cliosport.net. and look forward to chatting with you about your clios and my new speedster in the future

Roll on April.

Bye

If you did you wouldnt be the first.. we had about 5 Cups go splat into various objects over the past week.

You just have to respect the car.. take it slowly and realise when you should drive carefully and when it might be okay to push it a bit. A lot of people who go from a low powered car to a fast one write their cars off due to inexperience. Just be carefull and enjoy your car.

Got it preregistered. So I have to wait 90 days to pick it up from the time I bought it. Saved me a few grand tho.

Dealer guy said that this was one of the last batches of cups in the country. I think there are only about 30 or so you can still buy. 182 is really nice but £4000 in my back pocket sounds nicer.

Cheers

Degars,

Just use the head. Do a few track days if you want to explore the limits of the cars abilities. Driven sensibly the car is like any other...

Dunno about the Cup but my 172 scared the sh1t out of the missus when I first took her out properly in it.

just enjoy it before it starts to rattle ;)

Just give yourself time to get used to the car before you really push it to its limits, you should be keeping the revs down anyway for the first 600 miles or so while its run in, i believe below 3.5k revs is recomended in the manual.

i think youll brick it for a few days when you floor it but youll get used to it. Mine becomes unstable on the handling @ !20 so i dont know what a 172 is like.

yeah track day is a good idea either that or just dont push too hard in traffic or poor visibilty/road conditions, in other words find a nice empty country road when its dry that has a run off either side so if it does go pete tong at least you wont bend it. hope you enjoy the car and welcome to the madhouse fella :D

Very scary at 140 !! The car squirms under heavy braking at that speed too.

cups dont have ABS do they??
No they dont"!! I am fine about losing air con, spare wheel, etc to make the cup lighter, but I think I would have prefered if they left the abs on.

I just wont take it out in the wet... so I might get about 4 days driving this year if Im lucky!!!!

give it respect cuz they bite back. I, along with a dozen others have spanked theirs and its not fun being without your proper car. Have fun, I went from a 19 1.4 gts to the Cup. Not much difference really, heh.

Ive only had 2 moments when ive had all the wheels locked up, and it was my fault for pushing too hard, abs would have helped but just pump your brake pedal and dont flap!! Oh and change underwear when you get home.... ;)

Oooooooooooh another cup owner, again I am surprised that you can still get em?

As others have said take it easy at first until used to it and then you can start spanking scoobs like the rest of us;)

Oh and welcome to the forum!

No you wont spank it if you drive within your limits. Progressively increase those limits the more you drive it and youll be fine - and beating scoobs within no time. ;)
