Looking at a Clio 182 tomorrow, any advice?

Hi everyone, I'm new here so be gentle.

I'm off to see Clio tomorrow with the intention of maybe buying it and I'm wondering what to look out for with regard to simply looking at the car (under the arches, bonnet etc) and also if there's anything I should keep an eye out for while test driving?

This is the car if its any help: http://www.car-salesdirect.co.uk/us...ltsport-182-3dr-knaresborough-201406265328394

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, cheers.

I purchased my 172 recently and was in the same boat as you.

Although the belts on the 172 I bought were done only 10k miles ago, the dephaser was never changed and is currently making a racket so it might be wise to enquire if the dephaser has been changed along with the belts (dephaser and belts really should be done at the same time from what I have read).

Yeah that makes sense, the advert seems to rave about it's service history so hoping belts/dephaser etc is mentioned.

I think i'm just paranoid of getting a clocked, money pit of a car aha

You'll be ok. Have a good read of the service history, it tells a story about the car, and gives you an insight to what you are buying and how previous owners have cared for it.

Test drive it also!

Yeah I shall do, if it drives good, has had the belts and stuff done and the service history stacks up i'll probably put a deposit down there and then.

I've been driving 1.4 fiesta's for years so expecting a bit of a step up performance wise ha

Cheers for your input guys

There isn't much you can look out for on a test drive unless you have driven a couple. Without anything to compare to, it's hard to look for a bench mark.

What I am saying is if the suspension is worn out, you won't really know...it's not much to give it refresh mind if it's in need. Just drive it and listen out for any Knocks or bangs when pulling off or going over speed bumps/potholes.

Turns out he's got a full inbox so can't get through to the guy, could you please tell me what the 'bit of a scammer' link shows, don't think my membership allows me access to that thread.

Thanks again

He advertised lots of stuff, took people's money and then never supplied the goods. Admin got involved too by the looks of it.

Items for sale, took money, items never arrived basically.

Ah really, what a tool! Should this heavily change my view on the car do you think?

No. Not really.

It would make me scrutinise every bit of service history though. Usually people like that are not afraid to forge any receipts! Especially for big bills like cambelts and water pumps!

This is literally down the road from me mate, Knaresborough right?

I was going to go down and look at this a good month or two ago, It was on the yard and I noticed it driving home from work one day he said he would get back to me as soon as It had gone through the garage and pre sale checks, never heard anything from him! So could well be a lovely car, but just be very cautious like previous people have said due to the previous owner :)

Agreed, be careful and check any history especially belts etc. are from a decent garage and check with the garage the work was done.

The first thing I asked him when I picked up the phone was, what's the mileage and have the belts been done? He said he would get back to me but never did! So just be on the cautious side :)

yeah that's the one Joe :)

It turns out the vehicles service history is not great with much of the paper work containing several advisories about suspension and stuff. The body and interior are absolutely spot on but the drive train and chassis felt pretty 'loose' if that's the right way to put it.

The engines idol was also incredibly lumpy even after warming up, I know this is what they're like but it felt too lumpy.

After hearing about the owner and from what i saw, I'm going to walk away from that one.

Cheers for all your advice guys, if anyone spots a nice sub 85k clio 182 (in the yorkshire area) thats been very well looked after etc, let me know :)

Are you a local lad then? I have just purchased a RB 182 Cup so keep an eye out for me if you are! :)

Yeah the idle is like that on every clio mate, common problems seem to be idle and the exhaust issues that every member seems to have! I will keep my eye out for a nice 182 in the Yorkshire area for you :)

There's quite a few 182's on Autotrader at the moment within 20-30 miles of Leeds.

I'm on the look out for a 172 in the next couple of months so will keep an eye out.

Yeah none of them seem to fit the bill for me with regards to mileage, service history and modifications. PistonHeads had two on that were ideal (mature Clio fanatic etc.) but both had been sold by the time i got there. I've got till early August to get one so I'm hoping the right one will appear :)

Thanks mate

Iv just had a look and there are a shed load of 1*2's for sale around the £1500-800 mark. When I was looking there were only 2 or 3 worth looking at and mine wasn't that good if I'm honest. :/ if I had my money again I would have a nice blue or black 172 in a standard form! Couple of lovely ones on Auto trader at the moment.

Personally think this would be worth the effort to travel down and get. Looks really clean and well priced.

the problem i find with dealer listings is they always seem to be overloaded with all the useless universal information like what the seats are made of, if there are xenon lights etc. most of the time these specs are always typical of the model of car, id be more interested in them just putting up what the service stamps are and what receipts they have... itd be more useful than a spec sheet!

Could not agree more!

I'd be willing to travel far and wide if the price, condition and history is right

I bought the car in the end. Wrote on his thread before reading this mind! I hope the guy was more honest to his car than he was to everyone else.

I have had a 172 previously from 25k-60k miles and the car felt as tight as that car did to me- but only time will tell!

There is one in Wakefield at the moment, I gave that one a miss.
