Loose wheel bolts?!

Driving along the motorway the other night and I heard a severe knocking noise. Pulled over to investigate, to find the N/S/F wheel was about to fall off. Managed to get it tightened and all was well. Same thing happened yesterday, to the exact same wheel. All the other wheels are fine. :S

Wheels are non Renault 15" F1's and the wheel bolts are aftermarket items. Pretty sure I've read something about painted/powdercoated wheels causing this??

I've got a trackday booked two weeks today so I'd like to get it sorted!

There's no noises coming from any of the bearings. I'll check it, though.

Powder coatings/paint in the bolt holes can cause it. Burpspeed had the issue.

If I was you i'd get the dremel in there and get the holes back to bare metal.

But as Si said, wheel bearings are also a culprit.

Could be the hubs threads have worn out, or the bolts stretched. Mind did it at least 4 times.

Compare the bolt threads against a thread pitch gauge (or another known good bolt). The threads should intermesh allong the length of the bolt and any stretch will be shown by the threads appearing longer on a stretched bolt.

Will do mate, cheers. Not really a fan of aftermarket wheel bolts. They'll be getting changed with the ones on my Ph1 lol.

These are original Renault bolts, as fitted to my almost new RS133. After replacing all the tyres at less than 1000 miles old, the bolts were run in loose with a windy and then torqued up to 105Nm. Rechecking the torque when I got home, a couple of the bolts moved with 105Nm.
Heres two new bolts from the locking wheel bolt box. As you can see, the threads intermesh with each other allong the length of the threads.

Here, the top bolt is the good one. As you can see, the threads intermesh for a bit, then don't go together anymore as the thread pitch has become longer on the bottom bolt due to it being stretched.

I'm now running the PMS stud and nut kit

If you run the tap through just make sure you don't make it worse, take it slow and gentle lol...
