Lowering Advice

  1999 Clio Alize
After fitting some 15 inch alloys on my mk2 ph1 (tyres: 195, 50s), I am looking to lower my car. Because I am fairly new to this I don't know how far to lower it, ie. 40mm or 60mm, and whether to get just springs, or springs and shocks.

Firstly, how low can I realistically go with these wheels?
Secondly, is it worth buying springs and shocks or just springs?
Lastly, where can I get them from without being ripped off?

Cheers guys!

i have 60mm springs that are brand new in the box, make me a decent offer and they are yours, they havent even been taken out the box.

It depends on your budget, if you can afford it get both springs and dampers otherwise a decent set of springs will do fine.

Any off the shelf kit will fit without problems, providing your wheels aren't drastically different from the factory fitted ones.

If your looking to go low, Coilovers

On the cheap coilovers.. k tec

If your looking for a combo of low, better handling etc.. then some good well known coilovers.

If your looking for a subtle drop and slightly better handling.. imo.. Eibach sportlines springs.

Lots of branded lowering springs but i only went for Eibach because they have a good reputation.

Any drop on springs over 60mm, Shortened dampers are advised.

so if i were to go for a 60 mm drop just on springs would that be alright do you reckon? Also, how hard are new springs to fit, as I've never done any suspension work before...

Fitting springs is about a 2-4 hour job with a mate helping.. All depends how how smoothly everything goes.

Rears are a 30 min job.

Fronts are harder, Mine took total of 3 hours because the bolts where rusted up.

In a workshop with air guns id say an hour or less.

Lowered 60mm on springs with standard shocks would probably be ok, It will put more load on the shocks and they're life span will decrease being that much lower.

some pop up on here every now and again mate, i just sold my set just before you pm'd me about the springs, i think my original offer was a bit steep, so make me an offer going from that, iirc you can get gmax and pi shocks from demontweeks brand new but would be about 180-200 quid for all four corners.

I will have to wait til pay day next week to make you an offer mate, as I have just had my window smashed up by a pheasant costing me £120 and a parking fine for £60... Not pleased at all!

i lowered on 60mm for wel over a year with no probs,

now im lowered a lot more,

changing springs is a 5 minute job,

if your lowering for look, 60mm is the least you can go, (otherwise nobody will notice)
however as said, 30mm eibatch springs do offer performance increase.

does anyone have any pictures to show the ph1s lowered on 60mm springs and 15s, or pictures of the ph1s lowered on coilovers and 15s so that i can compare.... just seeing if its worth the extra.
