Lowering

  mk 2 clio
I'm thinking of lowering my car. How do I go about it. Is there anything I'll need to buy to do it aswell.
Thanks

1) Buy springs (£70 to 130 odd) and either pay a garage (£50?) to fit them or do it yourself (tools required: jack, axle stands, spring compressor, socket set)

2) Buy coilovers (£200 - £1000 odd) and either pay a garage or fit them yourself (tools required: same as above but don't need a spring compressor)

Springs - Cheap to buy. Good ride quality. Subtle drop. Firms it up a bit (feels a bit more sporty and responsive in corners)

Coilovers - Crashy, harsh, firm, bad quality ride. Any drop you like between 0 and -90mm ish. Sold cheaply = built cheaply.

Wut ? :S

Lowering springs on standard (old) shocks normally leads to problems as the stock shock isn't designed to work at that height.

£1000 of coilies aren't going to be crashy, harsh and give a bad quality ride. £200 ones slammed to the deck however, might not be the smoothest ride in the world. Get yours set up right and you're laughing. My Gaz ones on the old car were mint. Couple of clicks softer on the back and it was properly comfy if needed.

Flol, flip most of that!! ive had springs, cheap coilovers and more expensive coilovers. and id say definitely go for coilover over springs, i can hardly notice the difference with lowering springs on most cars, youll spend about £100 and be no better off. Coilovers gives height adjustment so you can go as low as you want and actually find a nice front and rear height ratio that give the car a lovely stance, theyre a little bit more but infinitely worth it!

springs - cheap, crashy, bad handling, crashy, unnoticeable drop (never what they say on the box).

coilover - handling upgrade (for sure on a non-sport), more comfort, infinite height adjustment.

all imo obvs!

LOL at being semi-flamed.

Everything I said was entirely correct for AVERAGE springs (30/40mm max - for which it is widely known that it's acceptable to have a drop of about 30mm or so without having any major issues r.e. the standard shock) vs AVERAGE (cheap: rokkor, ktec, etc) coilovers.

Sorry for not making it clear that I was on about cheap coilovers. I just assumed the OP, as he was asking for lowz and was also asking about springs, wasn't about to spend circa £1000 on decent coilovers, top mounts & corner weighting. My bad.

is it worth me lowering it seeing as next year or the year after im probably gonna change for a better clio and a newer one.
