lump of cast ali loose at front of engine?

  Titanium 182
Hi

Just opened the 182 up to check the oil and there is a big chunk of what looks like cast aluminium hanging loose, any idea what it is? just seems to cover the top of the exhaust manifold.

Cheers

Front of engine?

Sounds like the fuel rail guard

IIRC it's connnected by a couple of 8/10mm bolts which you can get to with a socket set extension etc

Certainly sounds like the fuel rail guard to me too. 2 x 10mm bolts, but you'll need a fine socket to get down the holes (1/2" drive probably won't fit). Just tighten her back up if she's come loose, not a good idea to remove. Without it, in the unfortunate event of a hard front knock, the whole engine bay gets liberally sprayed with the contents of your fuel tank.

If you're looking to loose some weight from the front of the car, and re-dress the awful weight distribution, whip out the carbon canister, accoustic valve and one of the horns (and their associated brackets) instead. If you don't mind spending a few quid (£25ish), it's well worth relocating the battery to the back of the boot (near side) too.
