lumpy tickover then strange sound of valves hitting pistons

  clio 172
Just bought a Clio 172, the car starts first time but as the car warms up the tick over becomes very lumpy. Drove the car for about 10 miles yesterday and at around 2000 rpm the car started making a horrible noise from the top end. To be honest it sounded like the valves were just hitting the pistons. I switched the car off, it starts and has still got compression, anybody else had similar problems ? Please help :S

Doubt full that the valves are physically 'hitting' the pistons other wise there'd be compression issues as a result but the first thing you need to do, IMO, is DON'T drive it anymore until the timing references have been confirmed/denied. Most likely the noise you're hearing is a dephaser pulley or something else on the aux belt run but it's gonna mean a trip to someone that knows these cars well around you (Where ever that may be) to be safe and sure.

What sounds like top end knocking on F4R's normally is the bottom end, from memory..

Get it checked by a specialist before you start it again.
