Mac upgrade

  visualize whirled pe
I'm looking to upgrade my mac (G4 dual 868mhz) to a new machine. I dont know which new mac to go for, so long as it is quicker than what I've got.

I've just seen the new Mac Mini on the net. Does anyone have one yet and what do you think. I'll use the monitor / keyboard from my G4 by the way.

I use the machine for graphics applications (cs) and work on big files so what ever I upgrade to will need to be suitable to run this type of software without breaking into a sweat. Is it only worth considering a G5? Any recommendations would be great!!

They dont make G5's anymore, MacPro has rnow eplaced them. New versions of them are expected soon so I would keep your money where it is for now.

Are you going to update your Creative Suite aswell? As CS1 and CS2 dont run that great on the new Intel Based machines.

I'm delighted still with my 20" iMac 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo, very fast computer and it runs CS2 and PS CS3 perfectly well. I think the newly designed models will be available within the next couple of months.

If you can hold on a couple of months then you'll get Leopard. I expect that it'll be released early june, but they might give a shipping date earlier (historically once they've announced a shipping date you'll be eligable for a free upgrade to the new version)

It looks like I'll hang on for a while, I use CS1 at the mo so I guess I'll be upgrading whether I like it or not now!

Buying a new machine is such a big decision for me as the bit of kit will replace my daily workhorse so I need it to be as reliable as possible too, just quicker than what I have.
Some of the guy's I have worked with have G5's which seem slower than mine when opening and manipulating files in cs although this could be because they are networked. I dont want to spend all that money and have a machine that is no better than what I have.

My mirror fronted G4 already has a very quick hard drive and 1.25GB of memory, is there any way I can release some more performance from it, or is maxing the memory to 2gig as much as I'll see?

cheers for the advice fellas.

The Intel machines will not be running at full capability until Leopard is released alongside Adobe CS3 Suite. For now CS2 is running under emulation on the Intel Mac's so it's slightly slower than the older models.

  Rav4
correct !!

Wait - will be good :)

CS2 is much slower on the intel macs than it should be ...... so are many other applications, wait for leopard.......

I might be going back to a PC as I find general stuff easier on them :S

They now have 8 core mac pros on the website too. :)
