Manifold & Cat Mating With Pipes?

  A Fast One!
im looking into changing the manifold on my 172 for a 182 one seeing as this is where the 182 gets its extra power from....

i have already figured out that i will need a 182 manifold and cat due to the manifold being longer but will the 182 manifold mate up to the midpipe of the 172 exhaust system?

i will be replacing the 172 system with something more free flowing but im weighing up my cost options at the moment and need to know whether the 182 cat and manifold will fit any exhaust system designeed for the 172 without a lot of chopping and bodging?

cheers,

Alex

you need to cut the 182 cat down slightly and weld a flange on the end in order for it to fit

the gap between the 182 manifold and a 172 exhaust system is slightly shorter than the length of a 182 CAT

Doesn't the 182 get it's extra bhp (or most of it) from the INLET manifold?

Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, only asking.

fred will probably clarify this for us but the 182 manifold is a 4 - 2 - 1 and the 172 is a 4 - 1 so there is a higher pressure point where the gasses go into the cat on the 172 system causing more back pressure, restricting gas flow and reducing power?

something along those lines

renault "cliam" the 182 has a larger lower inlet, but its just a better casting, nowt special about it

so am i better to do the inlet or the exhaust manifold then fred?

cheers,

Not alot in it really, You'd be better off decatting your 172 and matching the inlet and head. Between mine and steve's 182 there was 4ft/lb torque and 6bhp.

both!

inlet mod is available under £200 from Angel Works which is excellent VFM

182 exhaust manifold isn't a cheap mod to do (subframe has to come off = labour)

as above, de-cat + inlet manifold. iv'e done it with great results!!! may do the 182 zaust manny in the future, but its not cheap for the gains your likely to see.

With a decat and exhuast and inlet manifold ported will you need a remap to get the best from it?

Or will you see noticeable results without a map?

i have the 182 manifold and De-cat ran very lean , sent my R-sport ECU to fast chip they remapped it for 180 euro for 182 manifold, de-cat viper and 97+ ron petrol, it aint as good as a live map from example GDI but it was cheap enough for me and seems to be good no flat spots and the car runs stoich most of the time

the before line was with Benr's inlet manifold, decat & s/s exhaust.
After was with just the SMT6 added.

those BHP and torque figures seem very low on the before front?! is there a reason for this? was it before any mods at all or with the manifold, exhaust etc but without the smt6?

its clear that the smt6 gave a good 10bhp increase and at some points 20lb/ft of torque increase too though which is very good!

Changing inlet manifold and exhaust manifold are both beneficial aswell as taking away your standard CAT or getting a Sports CAT. back pressure means your'll geta better response at low revs, also from a standing start, helping zorst gases flow out quicker will free up the higher rev range making it more responsive.
