Manly antics, girly car

  tiTTy & SV650
Went out for a wee blast in the car cause I was bored, straight out the back road from mine out towards Loch Lomond, thought sod it and kept going to Stirling, drove under the castle looking great all floodlit and blasted back, country roads all the way, used a 1/4 tank of petrol but who cares.

As for the car, more than fast enough... thanks! Really forgiving too, I've had it 2 years now but blimey it reminded me how easy it is to cary speed. Scared me a couple of times tbh but was totally in control lol great fun, RS Clios, not the fastest cars on earth but more than quick enough and bags of fun.

:approve:

I envy you immensely having roads like you do right in your back yard literally....

I have to hunt out roads that are even slightly interesting (and well surfaced) and even then there is the risk of being nabbed by Mr Plod.

I drove in Scotland many moons ago up around Inverness and Loch Ness and the roads were absolutely glorious.....the sightlines are fantastic.
Only problem was i had a crappy Corsa at the time and couldn't exploit it!

I HAVE to get back up there....or Wales

  tiTTy & SV650
Welsh roads are too easy lol soooooooooo wide n smooth.

The borders have great roads, you don't have to come as far as here for good roads, Peebles and Dumfries and everywhere in between have amazing roads. within 1 hr of Carlisle.

Will be taking a blast up to Fort William next month, love the A82.

A9 north of Inverness is fantastic too, when I drive them I think who needs tracks.

I get really nervous driving in England, far more police on the roads, got to drive to Peterburgh in a few weeks lol boooo

182`s may be slow in the grand scheme of things but how long does it take to get into a flow where you can eat up miles of road at almost constant 80mph + mite take longer to get there than some cars but once your at that speed (about 4-5 secs diffo from a superfast car) you can maintain it like a superfast car can.

ive been out in the cup tonight, its running sweet and soooo quick low down out of corners it makes me grin.

  tiTTy & SV650
totally agree, on a B-road it'd take something mega low and stable to piss on an RS Clio.

I still think my 205gti felt better but the 182 carries 20mph more into the bends, which can scare you silly lol.

And fook me the engine sounds so good sometimes. I decided to see how long 4th was, saw 115mph on the clock, don't usually hold onto it that long lol, conserving fuel and all that...

I agree with you meggernan. On the way home from my last girlfriends house I could average about 70-80 and it was all about getting into a nice flow :D

  tiTTy & SV650
don't need to tell me about that lol my route to work twice a week just over a year ago for 13 months was 320miles on a 60mph A road, I'd do it in 4 hours 15 mins easily on a Sunday night, nothing and I really mean it, nothing passed me. Best time was 4 hours.

there were some dual carriageway sections maybe totalling 40 miles all in, used to get to my flat totally buzzing.

I love these posts of yours Rory, makes me jealous that I don't have an RS at times! Had a wee blast (if you can call it that in a 1.4!) today and she was handling sweet around the corners, so much better on the Eibachs than standard. Just need more power!

  tiTTy & SV650
I'd offer you a shot Kenny (in the passenger seat) but I don't like being responsible for someone else lol

I forgot to add, my roofracks on the car with 2 bike carriers (no bikes) the neds were sooooo gutted.

Nothing like a good late night blast to get the buzz going but im not doing the Cup justice on the roads down here and it gets really fustrating!

There are some that provide a challenge but there is just not enough of them and they are all way too short or poorly surfaced.

Now the Isle Of Man is somewhere i'd like to take the car....

  tiTTy & SV650
IOM, no speed limits out of town eh, I hardly stick to speed limits on back roads anyway, I don't think I'd want to go any faster to be honest lol

182 really feels like its on rails, I thought that more tonight than ever before tbh, weird.

Was heading straight at walls at the side of the road then just turning in and fook me it went! lol brilliant.

I'm gonna have to get a supermoto bike to get my kicks I think.

you feeling alright mate?! heading straight at walls is sounding like suicidal tendancies!

  tiTTy & SV650
lol there's no run offs on the road... the speed ur carrying you feel like ur going straight at walls, then turn in and away u go, great fun!

nice wee friday nite blast there rory, i did one last year up to arbroath to the tutties neuk just for the 'ell of it.

Cant beat the random jaunts!

  tiTTy & SV650
not at all new pads on the front recently I can drive like that for 4 hours plus and never feel any fade

sounds like fun, I know what you mean (ollie) because I live just north of inverness and the roads up here are great and the rozzers are not too hot either.

  tiTTy & SV650
Mozz twas me said bout north of Inverness, I used to work in Thurso and came home to Glasgow every weekend. the police don't really care up that way, between aviemore and inverness u keep your eyes open but you can sit at 80 all the way to Inverness no probs and not get done. Then after Inverness regular excursions to 100+ are quite common lol

Ever driven the Cazah Miah from Latheron towards Thurso?! its brilliant!

A couple good roads near me (West Calder) - the 'Lang Wang' aka A70 and the A71 isn't too bad in places either. Although last time I did the A70 my brakes faded big time lol

  tiTTy & SV650
A701 is a good blast down to Dumfriestoo, the roads heading to Peebles are great. and the road out from Strathaven towards the moto-cross track is great.

  172CUP/Fiesta supersport
aye I have, I used to go up there for a blast on the odd weekend when I had my mk1 golf gti never been up that far in the cup though!! must try it. Up west is great too towards gairloch/ullapool etc.

Sounds like great fun, reminds me of some of the drives i went on in my 205 GTI, the cup was the closest car to it, in terms of fun I think......very nearly as good as the 205 :)

I took a friend of mine out in mine the other night.
He has a 1.8 A3 non-turbo and he never shuts up about it, but then he has gone from a Skoda Felicia, a clapped out 306 into the A3 so he's a little bit heady about it.....claims its great to drive, has great grip etc.

Anyway, we went out in mine and i decided to show him great grip.

Took it down some roads which he raves about driving his car down, in and around Longcross and Cobham and he was whooping and gasping the whole time.....he couldn't believe that we were cornering as fast as we were without ending up in the scenery.

Have to say thats one thing the Cup does oh so well.....making people gasp.....and me for that matter. For all its shortcomings, (rattling and banging), when its pushed it just revels in it.

Ahhh now i drove from Strathpeffer (spelling?) to Ullapool and back again on a road that was absolutely brilliant!
One of the best drives ive had and that was in the crappy 1.2 Corsa with a knackered engine mount, so god knows i'd play there all day with Cup!

anyone who knows about RS clio`s knows its about the flow and building up a safe rythm keeping control and now and then just pushing the throttle a bit more, downshifting in time so to not have to brake hard (brakes slow you down booo) and then taking a wide line into the corner and keeping it nailed to the inside line throughout until you exit and hopefully can get on cam at late 2nd or torque from mid third.

nite driving rocks on empty dark b roads especially when you know theres a tight corners somewhere but the beams cant quite make it out so you slow cautiously but not enough to take the thrill out of it just in time to hit the corner and laugh at how it went round and how good it felt. love the cup at the mo :D

Really? Wow....glad im in good company then!

Yeah i stayed in Strathpeffer for a week about 4 years ago now. Loved it up there.
Hopefully getting back up there soon

I really like reading your posts rory. Its nice to read about someone who actually goes out on proper roads and enjoys their car, and isnt obsessed with whether its 0.000001 second quicker than some other car.

For me these really are drivers cars. I had toyed with the idea of getting rid of mine at times because I didnt know if I could live with the reliability. But then, when I thought "what can I replace this with", I just didnt have an answer - sure some cars are faster, but not many handle better, and as a blend of speed, handling and just outright fun, theres just nothing better for the price IMO.

Not all of England is poor for driving. I live in Co Durham and I have all the roads around Durham (no fixed cameras in the whole of Durham that I know of although how long that will last I have no idea), and to be fair, very few in Northumberland. The ones that do exist are usually in 30 zones, and frankly you shouldnt be speeding there anyway, not when theres loads of miles of 60 roads! The talivan is the main thing to watch out for, but they are usually in and around Tyneside / Wearside rather than Northumberland, and you tend to get a feel for where they are anyway.

TBPH as long as you are sensible up here, there are plenty of roads where you can safely enjoy very high speeds. A lot of people say to me "your car is pointless because when can you ever use the power?"..... shows what they know ;)

  tiTTy & SV650
lol at talivan!

Come on Northumberland practically is Scotland ;) I don't doubt there's good driving roads in England, its a big place lol just from my experience I'm always on the motorway heading somewhere when down South so am always on the look out for traffic cops and vans on bridges etc.

So I drive differently over the border, only cause I know what I can get away with here.

It's a drivers car for sure, I'll take it on track this year too me thinks. :approve:

Haha, so true, actually I've "accidentally" ended up in Scotland a couple of times just driving around there. Usually on the A68... actually theres no cameras at all on the English side of the 68, but there is loads on the Scottish side:( and some of them on in places where you would overtake slower vehicles, so overtaking without getting caught requires some skill, and a powerful car (which the Clio is).

Still, find a nice twisty road and I find even at 60 in the Clio it can be fun. The only other car I've enjoyed driving as much as the Clio was my old Mk2 Golf GTI - slow car, but fun to drive. I also had a Fabia vRS, which was a nice car, but it just wasnt exciting to drive in any real way - just nice (and boring).

To me its no surprise that the Clio has won so many road tests.

drive a wee bit further Paul (I think ur names Paul? lol) get yourself on the roads around Peebles, superb blast

Another top Rory post - Sounds like a fun run out. See 100% where you are coming from on the 205 GTi comparisons now. Had an early morning blast last Saturday down to Castle Combe with a Mate in his GTi 6. Though I was going faster through the bends than the 205 ever would it just did not feel the same. Faster yes but lacking the 205's feel. Just made me want coilovers more.

  tiTTy & SV650
coilovers front strut brace and no power steering and maybe it would match the 205 ;)

mates got a de-cat'd diablo red gti-6, nice car, gearbox makes it, always in the powerband! but the 182 easily pulled on it :approve:
