Doesn't need a license to check the ECU "history" IIRC.
5k kick, 7500 limit (the rev counter is hardly precise) or "smooth" idle etc. could be somewhat difficult to determine if you've only ever driven one 1*2 etc.
The cars I have with cams make a totally different noise.. It could be described as lumpy.
I'm no expert though perhaps the previous owner can shed some light..
