Meltdown?

Driving to work the other day and I could smell burning plastic. Thought it was a bit odd and when I got to work, I checked under the bonnet. My coolant bottle had melted and there was a large hole in the top of it! Anyone suggest what could have caused this please?

the bonnet release cable has shorted with something elctrical, giving a 12v feed to it, heating it up, melting the coolant bottle where the cable is next to it on the bulkhead?

mine did this anyway!

The thing is, when I drive it now the bottle sizles with the pressure
