Mileage or condition

Hi,

I have been looking at several 182's (only 53 have been sold here in Holland, so not a lot of choice) and basically they can be divided into two groups, the ones between 60K and 75K (Km) and the ones above 140K.
To me 140K seems a lot engine wise (isn't it a higly strung engine?)
I know about condition over mileage, but i'm planning on having this car for a few years.
Any tips on what to look for, any indicators of trouble or usage? (I have read the guide, but it seems a bit short)
I know about the sychro's, i have read the short guide in EVO...any more?

I'd say condition is the one to look out for. Look for one that's had the belts done and fully stamped up service book. Mileage isn't too much of an issue as long as it's been looked after. There's some people on here with 130000 miles plus and still going strong.

Both imo, you just 'know' that a car is genuine when you see/drive it imo.

A car with 20k on that has been used and abused is nine times out of ten going to be in worse condition than a car with 70k on that has been looked after though.

I've just clicked over 100k miles and its still more solid than the ones I test drove when looking for one. I test drove one that had 65k on it and it was the biggest pile of arse ever. Got mine when it was on 82k and it still feels spot on.

Condition and Milage are equally important for me.

I would'nt buy a tatty car nor would i buy a car with above average milage either.

I'd be worried about gearboxs and cambelts more than anything else.

^ Spot on, mine was 101k when i bought it with full history and belt changed about 5k ago and it drives like a dream

Listen out for how the engine sounds on the test drive, how does it tick over in idle before and after the test drive also. Check the interior out and excpect some wear and tear form the seats but you can tell if its been looked after on a cosmetic point of view by checking the inner door sills, the engine bay isit realitvley clean? Get under the car and see if theres any excess oil seeping through (excpect some with this type of engine).

I agree with the point above however, trust your gut feeling on them. Its worth checking out 4 or 5 and test driving them all and note any differences. You dont wana go rushing in to the first one you see.

As to the answer of your orginal question mileage with a regular service is fine if its a bit high. But condition for me should be your first port of call, afterall who knows how that mileage has been achieved, was it motorway miles for example.

Good luck
