misfire between 5-6k revs

Car  clio 172
phase 2 172 between 5&6k revs experiencing a missfire it felt like hitting a limiter but if i keep my foot down it stops the enigne is warm. i changed the spark plugs today as a thought but still doing it.The rev counter jumps about when it happens,my next though is the cat because it has smelt recentley any ideas?
 
mates had similar

changed coil pack plugs ht leads and lambar sensor and it stil happens
 
on the way to work i gave it stick and it didnt do it but when it was warm it started to do it again going to get it into my mates renault garage asap
 
mine used to pause, but only if engine wasnt fully warm. How long have u been running car when it happens

ive had exactlythe same problem mate as fil_b said. it only ever happens high in the revs, ive changed leads, coilpack, plugs pretty new and air/fuel ratio sensor and it still happens, no codes and no lights. sometimes just a small pop other times it shakes violently. i booked it in to renault and since ive booked it in its not done it:S typical!!!! so may have to cancel the booking now. 1 thing i did find was that the wires for the coolant temp sensor was pulled very tight, ive managed to slacken it but dnt even know if it was that causing the prob. electrical problem somewhere im guessing.
 
i did think it was vvt related as it only ever happens high up the revs, maybe the vvt solenoid is nakered or electrical problem with that.
 
sumtimes wen i start mine up and its cold, it feels like summit is pulling me back, as if its lagging or sumthin, then if i bash it off the limiter or the exhaust pops, it stops, only does it early morning when its cold, that just pressure in the exhaust? sorry to sway off course like...
