Mitsubishi Evo VI Enhancement Detail...

Hello again chaps. On this occasion I thought it was time to show some decent detailing instead of dirty box to clean box like I usually do. What better than a poor condition Pearl Black Evo VI!

Bought recently by my Cousin's Fiance it wasn't in the best condition, granted it's been driven not detailed and is a good 10 years old now! The main aim was to restore some actual Black into the paint and remove the worst of the swirls while re-visiting for some heavier correction at a later date if required.

So some befores and straight into it. Everyone knows how to wash a car by now! Usual process carried out nothing fancy.

So inside for some drying, masking and some checking paint depths, more fun ahead. Now i'll mention that jap paint in general is soft, of course you never take this for granted but is a decent rule of thumb until you get to check. Paint depths were all over the place on the particular Evo, some serious low points, 2 front wings being very low, was very careful and the Bonnet and driver's door being high.

I had previously checked this Evo and it was very soft so decided on a combo to do the job. In this case a very old favourite combo of Lime Prime on a 3M Yellow pad was the order of the day...

Quick check with the Sun Gun revealed some light marring! Yes marring with LP and a brand new pad! That's how soft it was! I was sitting with a WTF face! Decided to step down to 3m Blue pad, usually used for finishing and keep going with the LP.

Left this...

Exactly what I was looking for, some great removal with minimum clearcoat removal, whilst leaving some deeper RDS. Conditions were good and LP giving great work time.

Not too bad for such a simply combo. Never to be underestimated. I stopped using LP for quite a bit. The oils in the product that actually make it so good cause bonding issues with some waxes and sealants. These days to get the best from the LSP after LP I like to give it a double Panel Wipe wipe down...

7672275986_83b06da039_z.jpg

IMG_7174 by gally.., on Flickr

Today's LSP of choice had to offer durability but I needed it to look good, I think Black deserves it. Z2 and Swissvax Bos. Bos for those that know it's a lovely wax but imo it has simply become a show wax on it's own. Packed full of oils it leaves a great finish but simply washes away too quickly, hence the great base of Z2. Nice solid sealant bonding to bare paint for any further layers like Bos. So best of both worlds.

Weather always seems to let me down for afters recently! Thanks for looking in. Hoping to have a FRS 500 as the next mjor write up, if not my Golf in a frock! ;)

Great turn round on it, Can i be nosey and ask what your low points measured at, My evo 6 is about 80 microns all round give or take minus a front wind thats been sprayed. Also the auto finesse mercury is that just a hand application because that was a huge revival!

Yeah just hand, little bit of wire wool on the outside, MF only everywhere else. Decent product from them.

It was around the 70-80 in parts just under on the front wings and lower doors. :) Jap paint at it's best tbf.

Impressive stuff from a simple combo, have nt seen people using Lime Prime for a while

Indeed mate, deserves some praise even in today's heavily populated market.

Awesome work. Can't believe how soft the paint was though :O

Tell me about it. Was a tad shocked.

Thanks for the comments guys, always means a lot.

Holy sh*t I can't believe how you turned that around, it looks stunning compared to how it was before.

You'll have to have a look at the dog kennel on Saturday and give me some tips,
I just assumed it was beyond help, but mine is about as bad as the Evo was before you started.

Might be salvageable after all.

Great as always you big tart x

Does look rather good, wish I was able to do that, you would be horrified if you saw me wash a car

Love lime prime :) good work, those wheels are so f**king 90s, I have set in my unit that were on a shitty 306 lol

Holy s**t i thought you wouldnt pull that off as well as it turned out.

Fair play.

P.S those rear lights are possibly the worst ive ever seen.

Wheels appear to be genuine Zero Fighter / Extreme items, Work Meister I think.

Although they were an option on the JDM options list, they're gash on a non-ZF.

Nice work none-the-less, I love a VI, last of the proper evos (Group A).

  330i. E30 Touring.
Incredible work.

My favourite part has to be seeing your reflection though.

Oh, and WTF (!!!) are those wheelz, bruv?

Lovely turn around.

I'm surprised at how effective LP is at removal, guess that is testament to the softness of the paint!

Thanks mate.

Little bit of technique aswell mate but on any other paint a 3M Yellow pad would help. See some of Russ' old threads. It's a clever product. I'll try out their new Micro Prime soon. Need to speak to Dawn about it.

Lovely job mate!

Were you wiping down after each panel? I would have thought LP would be filling as well as correcting?

Mercury never fails to impress!

Yeah of course wipe down each panel, kinda went without saying I thought especially with LP, can't afford to have filling when working on someone else's car unless that's what is agreed. The double wipe down at the end is a must though even with minimal oil polish. It's something i've been doing a lot of recently.

Thanks for that mate. They have an utterly stupid dish in the middle of the inner wheels, the dirt and water just sits in it! Very frustrating! He does have a Zero Fighter sticker. I have no idea what that is! Evo noob!

I can say one thing, it's jesus H quick. Has some mods aswell.

I have no idea, nor does he. I wouldn't say he's not really a car person per se'! I don't like the wheels, lights or tints, it's how he bought it right enough so looking forward to seeing how it comes out.

Big thanks for the comments chaps, means a lot! The owner didn't think the paint was salvageable either tbf. Always nice to surprise people with what can be achieved.

Hoping to have something a little special to detail soon.

No problem :) There was a limited edition in Japan called the Zero Fighter, approx 340BHP, bodykit (front/rear lips, sideskirts), different springs, the Work Meister wheels, badging etc.

It wasn't called the Zero Fighter in the UK as that was a name given to a WWII Japanese fighter plane and would've been considered bad taste - so it was called the 'Extreme' and available with 450BHP  through the then named Ralliart UK in Dudley.

Having said all that, your mans wheels are 17s and they were 18s on the ZF/Extreme, so could be fakes after all.

Here's a shot of an Extreme for reference:

It certainly doesn't have those bits!

It is an import though. Japanese stickers everywhere, door cards, the lot! It's kinda cool!
