Mixing sticky track tyres with normal tyres?

Sorry, I know that 'mixing tyres' has been done to death! I've read through as many as I can but my question is a little more specific.

I currently have Michelin PE2s all round but have a puncture on my spare and a crease on a rear. I always replace the tyres on an axle at the same time.

I want to switch over to 'track oriented' rubber and have ordered 2x Hankook RS2s. The 'near perfect' rear PE2 will be my spare.

Should I have my nice sticky RS2s on the front or the rear? I'm mainly asking this there is going to be a bigger difference in ability (both wet and dry) and I'm just a little unsure.

Fronts: more grip in the dry (than PE2), less grip in the wet(?). Back end more likely to step out?
Rears: more inclined to understeer in wet?

I'll be replacing the other two with RS2s when required but I'm not wasting money by replacing them early.

Front mate, but just be aware the rear may flick out due to the grip differences. It would be better changing all 4 and selling the pe2s

I ran new PE2's on the front and worn RS2's on the rear throughout the winter. It was perfectly balanced, I'd say there was naff all difference in grip between the two. I'm not saying it's a good idea to test the ultimate grip limits in the wet though.

I'm with this answer. I once passengered a Cavalier round the ring that had Kumho V700's front, it was scary. You push as you feel grip through the wheel but the rear end can't keep up. Alot of opposite lock moments. On the road just take it easy and you'll be fine.

Excellent, cheers chaps.

I'm not sure how much the PE2s are worth really (I'll have to measure the tread). I did think of just removing them and keeping them for spares in the future as I'd like to get another set of wheels to have a 'road set' and a 'track set'... just not got the cash right now.

A mate of mine runs 888's on the front and T1rs on the rear of a puma. I'm waiting for the phone call to collect him from a hedge :dapprove:

Funny I always run the better tyre on the rear as I've always found my clio cup very keen to swap ends. I did Mallory Park with two bald/ melted paradas on the front and two good ones on the back and it almost felt rear wheel steer;)

The clio is a front wheel drive car so you should have the best tyres on the front otherwise you'll get more understeer. Ideally you would have 4 of the same though unless you wanted to force a bit of oversteer.

It would never be as bad as people make out though unless you had completely bald tyres on the rear.

Has anyone here actually had RS2's on their car? They provide very similar grip levels to the PE2's.

I always thought best tyres on the back.

As you brake into a corner the weight is transferred to the front which pushes the front wheels into the ground but the rears have little weight over them so are more likely to step out, so you want the best grip on the back, especially in the wet.

I had the better tyres on the front, understeer is much safer on the road than oversteer. Just drive drive it sensibly.

Oh well, we'll find out soon enough.

Camskill should be delivering the 2 RS2s today and then they'll be getting fitted at the weekend.

I can always swap if it's too understeery/oversteery. It won't be long until I get the other two done though

Makes no sense!

Better tyres on the front, would give more grip on the front and therefore a balance toward oversteer.

If you want an understeer balance you'd put crap tyres on the front so the nose just pushes wide.
