mk1 front shocks

Hope someone has some insight into this,

put my mk1 1.4rt through mot the other day, failed on incomplete springs, amongst other things, long story short, shock absorber bolts and nuts in the engine bay were stuck fast, no heat or force could shift em, so chiseled em off and went to fit replacement front struts from a scrapper, only to find the hub bolt spacing wrong for my motor (why change the size renault, why?!) cos i'm pressed for time, got new shocks and swapped them in the front strut set i got from the scrappers. great i thought, whip em straight in now, only they're a b*tch to get in, noticed that when you compare the brand new shock to the one i took off, it extends about an inch more, so when the springs on, its a longer unit as a whole. thought this might put excessive strain on the front axle and make it ride higher if i managed to get it on. its the 1st time i've changed shocks, so is this normal, or are the shocks too long?

cheers

Id hazard a guess that maybe the new one will compress to the right size once its on, and the old one has been on so long maybe its stuck or something :s
