Mk1 P/3 p155ing me off

  180.5 bhp 172
Hey all,

My Mk1 Phase 3 is really getting on my nerves now.

Its making a high pitched squeeking noise from the front wheels. It doesnt do it when i brake, and only does it when i turn the wheels. If im on the motorway its ok till i go to change lanes/go round a bend, then eeek eeek eeek eeek  When i get home it smells really bad...Like burning rubber smell (like ive done a skid).

There is another problem....

Every now and again it will stall at idle (sat at traffic lights etc) then wont start again for about 40mins (was in a contraflow on the motorway today and it cut out at 20mph!), then all of a sudden, without warning, it'll start again (30/40 mins later)

Its not driving any diff to what it used to when i bought it or anything.

Any idea's?

Thanks alot
Nick

You may have a a problem with power steering... i have a similar problem, the steering rack may need replacing...! also check the power steering reservoir cap, mine leaks, and i think its to do with backwards pressure coming from the pump...?

also are u braking quite hard(but not skidding)...? I get a really strong rubbery smell when ive been braking hard... its the brake fluid getting really hot on the discs...!

Have u checked the alternator, maybe faulty or s**t connection with wires... i had similar with my valver and it was a loose connection to the alternator!

Don't think any 1.2 Mk1 Phase3's had Power Steering did they?

I had the none starting - it was the starter motor - it'd worn so much it was turning at an angle so getting stuck - if it worked or not, was random.. but always seemed to work when jumping it off a 2nd battery or car as it had that bit more juice.

The stalling - it's a common problem I think - it's very intermittant tho.. it won't hold the revs.. but then, it'll just start working again.

yeah the later phase 3's did i think. there certainly a place to mount the pump on the D7F engine.

deffo seems like power steering...

This is what happened to my starter on my 1.2..

Very odd.. it made a clunk every now and again but started.. sometimes, it just didn't.. but like I said, extra boost of power was enough to turn it.

oh right...so theres ment to be a cap on the end of the sproket then...i take it thats what hold the spring in place to!

did you manage to drive it like that?! i would have thought it would do major damage to your fly wheel! lol.

Cheers for the info guys.

My car does NOT have power steering, so its not that.

Im not braking hard, its just when ive been driving for about 30mins and get out of the car i can smell the burning really badly. Ive never had it before.

When it cuts out and wont start again, it will turn over but it wont fire, then all of a sudden, vroom.

I'll take it to the local garage in the morning and see what they say.

Was fine, just didn't start everytime..

Once I changed that, it was lovely.. started on first turn everytime! mmmmmmmmm.

I miss my 1.2.. hehe.

are the brakes hot? sounds a bit like a sticking caliper

or perhaps a loose wheel/dead bearing causing the disk to move around in relation to the caliper

and by "not start" do u mean it'll crank over endlessly and not fire or not crank over at all

Noise sounds like a sticking caliper as dave says.

Starting problem i've had similar...thought it was the starter and/or timing sensor but wasn't - it was just the battery was shagged and wouldn't hold a charge. This is most likely on yours IMO as the 1.2 batteries are smaller than other clios so likely take more of a beating.

It is smaller on mine...compared to a 16v battery the std 1.2 item doesn't even fill the battery tray....thats a new std item from halfords.

You do need a battery to run the engine.

I had a starting problem with my Ph 3 and the cable connecting the starter motor was loose and just fell off one day!

Check the spark plugs, leads and dizzy cap for wear. That might be causing the stalling, it happened to me a couple of times.
