Mk1 probs

  Chav Rocket
hi sorry to take you all back into the past! have a few problems wondering if anyone has experienced them and have any soloutions:

1. Clutch housing rubs on engine? makes a awful squeaking noise granted it goes after a few minutes but its damn annoying

2. seems like the car holds back in second gear i think between 3-4000 rpm
3. engine is a bit tappy ie noisy.

cheers

You sure the clutch housing is rubbing on the engine, as its bolted to the flywheel and definately isn't going anywhere.
Could just be your alternator belt which needs tightening.

nah not castrol definatley, it was in a blue bottle......... lol cant remember darn name now! ill check when i get home.
Mole: yeah its def the clutch housing if i hold it then it stops making the sound. but had a hunt and couldnt really see a way to pull it away from the engine

Dude, welcome,

If you have a 'energy renault' engine then it would be a noisy engine anyway, I got the same problem, Dont know about the other though, but as mole said are you deffinately sure its the clutch housing?

so when you engage the clutch it goes away? if thats the case then its prob the release bearing.

Am sure someone will verify that as I'm not totally 100% sure

ok the sound goes after the car has warmed up but while it is making the sound engaging the clutch does actually take the sound away, is the release bearing tricky to do?
My dad is a mechanic so it isnt really about if it can be done by a pair of amatuers its more how long would it take.
thinking back now i remember once i was driving in town and i engaged clutch and there was a "bang" and the car wouldnt find any gears (it happened right on the bloody rondabout too!) i rolled it to a stop turned car off pressed depressed clutch and it felt fine restarted engine - all fine??? does this compound your theory mole?
Cheers
Jonni
