When I originally placed my order for the Mk1 Clio (some 2 years before the first rolled off the production line) there wasnt even a prototype available for test drive, although there was a V6 (possibly mock-up) up on a ramp outside some hotel on the M4 in West London, so I made a special trip over to look round it, though my order was already placed by then anyway, and I had decided I was having it no matter what it drove like! I had that convo with my then girlfriend - "were spending £26k on a new car" - "whats it drive like?" - "no idea...."
Sadly change in circumstances meant I had to canx my order a year later (just after Id been offered delivery of a silver one, though I was still holding out for my illiad blue one on order).
This time around, I wasnt going to let silly little things like not knowing what it drove like stop me from buying it - though after 5 mins in the drivers seat giving it hell around the Devon roads, it was very clear that it drove every bit as well as I had hoped, and then some!
The mk1 vee gets some bad press & reviews, and I had expected it to feel almost sluggish, such is the sl*gging it gets in the press for being overweight and underpowered - I can only think that many of these "journalists" havent actually got behind the wheel of one. Theyre all quick to recommend a 172, but I bought one of those for my ex, and having driven both, theres simply no comparison.
Now that theyre down to approx £13k second hand, then its almost a no-brainer to me. £16k for a new 182 or £13k for a cherished V6.... Unless you need the back seats, more luggage space, or cant cope with the fuel or insurance bills, then it has to be the bargain of the century!
BUY BUY BUY!
Just my humble opinion....
