Mk2 Ph1 Speedo Fault (Elastic band sanpped)

Noticed the other day the speedo was bouncing around, Whilst holding at 30 it was jumping to 35 and dropping to 25. Then when on mway on way back from Scunthorpe doing 85, it just dropped down to 0 the came back about 3-5 miles later bouncing away.
Just got in car to pop round shops and no speedo again at all.
I've done a search but not sure if it'll be a cable or g/box sensor or what. (I dont have ABS) any ideas on if I can fix myself cos too skint to pay someone!

Any help appreciated guys.

I've just done dashboard check with reset held down. All needles move fine so not the electric side of things. (hopefully!)

You sure you haven't got ABS? Does the light come on when you turn the ignition on (abs)?

Otherwise the speedo sender is on the back of the gearbox at the top afaik. Could be a bad connection hence its intermittant.

Apparently it's got no sensors on brakes as I thought it had ABS, until I did a 20yrd pull up when a truck pulled out on me! Found out quick.
I'm just a poor man without ABS! I'll have a look at the gearbox over the weekend, it started working again on way to work this morning! Typical french cars dont like the rain.

Its a sesnor in the gearbox a new one or you might be lucky and save a few quid and its just a loose sensor/wires/bad connectio and a clean up/refitment fixes it.

Seems to working ok again, but at least I now know what to look at next time.
Believe me it will happen again! cos it's always wet round here.
