More power - cams?

Car  Golf GT TDI, IS220d
Hi im looking to get a bit more power out of my 182. I was thinking of getting TB's but not really looking to spend that amount of cash anymore.

I currently have a full SS scorpion system with decat, remap and panel filter.

I know next to nothing about cams so any info would be good i.e, power gains, total cost inc fitting, which profile an manufacturer......... also some feedback from people who have/had them fitted would be great.

(any other ideas besides cams would be welcome too)

Thanks alot, Gaz :D

Can I ask what power your car is currently producing as I have got the same car and was looking to put on the same mods that you have.

I would not advice going cable throttle conversion and a stand alone ecu.

You do get better throttle response, but you loose some electronic devices like cruise/speed control, and I believe ESP and ABS.

A remap can and will improve throttle response aswell using the normal renault ecu.

I heard Cams give you around 10 - 15 bhp, and complete different engine charactaristics.

As far as I know Franx (forum name) is getting some C&B cams fitted by Henk (Fastchip) so you could check with him. CatCam / Shrick / any other brands are fitted more often so someone will come along to tell you more.

You lose traction control and cruise but not abs!
The car drives 3 billion times better with bodies. Had mine on now for just over a month and its the best money i have ever spent!!!
CAT Cams will give approx 10-15 bhp on a standard engine and will cost about 1k fitted plus mapping on top.

Why do you not advise it then????
Have u driven one with bodies or are you just going by rumours on here from tonnes of others who have never driven one with them, let alone been in one :)

If you get standalone management with cable throttle body, then you can add on ITBs and really agressive cams with mapping to suit. OR a turbo should you win the lottery.

If you leave it as FBW throttle and standard ECU, then you keep the "toys" and you can only add medium road cams and a remap.

If you have less than £800-£1k to spend the best you can do IMO is a custom remap or a really cost-effective RStuner remap

@ Dan R

I am talking about swapping the original electric single throttle body of a 182 for a cable operated single throttle body like ph1 172. This imo has no pro's besides better throttle response. This is what sideways danny is talking about??

You are talking about individual throttle bodies that's going to be a total different thing, I have no expirience with.

Thanks for all the info guys. I think i'll definatly be keeping the FBW throttle and standard ecu. How much are we looking for cams + fitting then? I have a rs tuner kit already - will it be possible for Henk to send me a correct map for the cams if i send him the performance analizer information or will i need to get a remap with the cams?

Also does anybody know somewhere in my area that can do this - North Wales/N.West

Cheers

i would imagine henk will be able to send you a futher tweaked map once you pass him your cam details, try birchdown for fitting they are rs clio experts based chesire.

yeah thanks john, i already asked steve about the fitting so hopefully they can sort that out. I think i'll also email Henk to see if he can provide a new map. Cheers

anyone know what sort of power i'll be looking at with the following mods then:

panel filter (maxogen on way hopefully), full ss system with decat, remap and cams on way

about 195bhp???

I'd be dissapointed with under 200 with 420's on a healthy 182, 428's are alot more peaky so you'll feel the lack of low down grunt in comparison.

Thats what i was hoping really but i dont want to get my hopes up.

So 420's are the ones to go for then yeah?

Depends what you want from the car mate. 420's give a more spread torque curve, 428's are peaky and you sacrifice low down to gain higher up. Personally, I'd stick 428's in, battery in the boot to get a straighter inlet tract and get the car live mapped. If you had a package, you'll get a flashed ECU with the cams map on it, which is great but if you got cams direct and got the Kevs to fit them, then drove to Paul @RStuning or similar to get it live mapped, you'll get better gains and driveablilty.

Live maps cost more but are well worth it.

thanks mate explained alot there. I think i'll go for the 420's as i dont really want to sacrifce low down. Yeah i'll probably get the kev's to fit them if possible and hpefully to keep cost's down i'll get henk to sort me a map seing as i've got the fastchip unit already

Anyone got any recomendations of where to get some cams then (other than kam racing)? Got the fitting sorted just need to purchase some cams :)

<<<<coatesy, problems with ya eyes r summit:rasp:
wey if it was me nd u get the cams make sure u change the cambelt too save labour costs

lol sorry mate i took a while to post - it was meant for the post before yours. No choice about new cambelt i hear but abviously it would be done at the same time. Im having 2nd thoughts now about cams after a chat with BenR, i'm thinking the gains arn't worth the money they will cost. Might save the cash towards something else, not sure yet though
