MOT de-cat annoyance

Ok so im getting abit fed up of swapping it every Dec, so my options are:

  • Source a 182 cat and get BTB to make it into a 172 pipe.
  • Buy a 172 sports cat second hand.
  • Get a local place to cut my mid section and bolt in a 200 cell sports cat.
  • Find a local MOT place to pass me with a de-cat, even though this seems the best option, I don't have any mates that work for garages so near impossible.
  • Refit my OE cat and swap it back after, again might seem obvious but as im sure you know changing the cat on a 172 is a b**ch and labour cost wise its pointless getting it done every MOT.
If I was to get a 200 cell sports cat bolted into my system after the currently fitted de-cat would this cause any issues? Reason I ask is because the lambda sensors will obviously be further up the pipe and won't know about the cat.

another option..

fit a 182 manifold and the shortened cat the likes of ktec do for the conversion.. easy to swap then from cat to decat ;)

Apart from the price of the 182 manifold and the cost of the 10 hours it takes to fit it? :D Would love to though if I had the spare cash to waste on the car.

im in the same boat at the min, mot due in two weeks, really bad time of year to be swopping cats. Am busting a bollock trying to find an emission friendly mot place but not looking promising

ouch, had the insurance in oct, so not that much of a kick in bollock for me. . . .well it might be yet ha

Yeh I have, unfort the lady I speak to who answer the phone is abit like "meh" and one of the testers is his wife :/

There's your problem tbh. ;)

try speaking to the mechanics themselves, because I doubt they let the receptionists etc know that they "dodge emmissions".

No good ringing mate, it could be anyone on the blower and the garage would be in the s**te if they were found out. Best bet is to go in perosn and ask. Wouldn't bother with big name garages either.

Either that or when it comes to the MOT, tell them you've put the cat in the boot. If they want to fit it then they can. Doubt they will though.

Twin barrel cat, it only has one lambda, ill just plug in my first and leave the other hanging, assume this will cause a dashboard light but not effect the running in any way?

The first time I ever Mot'd a car with a decat I took it to the local kwik fit (It was over ten years ago, sorry...) and said

''Hi, can I book my car in for an MOT? The thing is, its got a decat, will that be a problem?''

No problem sir, MOT's are normally £40. For you it will be £60.

Sorted.

+1.

I know loads of places in my area, just speak to them in person.

Also, if you MUST change it, do it yourself.

Exhausts are a royal PITA if you ask me but beats paying someone your hard earned cash when it's really simple, just requires a few swearwords lol.

Easy with a set of ramps, I wouldn't even attempt mine on my driveway, wish I could :(

Can't be that bad, I do all the work on mine on the driveway, all you need is a hydraulic jack and two axle stands.

If I need ramps I take it into college lol. Shouldn't need em for exhaust work on a 172 though.

its a royal c**t of a job on 172 to get them manifold to de-cat nuts on. Couldn't do it with my sausage fingers, had to call whiteley to bail me out

Find a friendly MOT man.

even with a ramp it takes a good hour to swap over the 172 cat / de-cat.. you need the hands of a 5 year old, with E.T's fingers.
