MOT/Emissions/Bad mpg Symptoms

  330 Ci
I've recently been getting quite appauling mpg out of my car, despite the dash display lieing to me - the miles per tank tell a different tale.

I'll list the symptoms as its far easier:
  • Recently struggled to pass the MOT, failing repeatedly on Fast idle emissions - barely scraped through - was 0.1% under and took 9 re-tests and half an hour of revving its tits off to pass!
  • Coolant Temp Sensor went mental after a track day and wouldn't allow the car to start, idled high, ran rich (I presume it put the ecu into cold start loop).. appeared to cure itself but i replaced that sensor anyway just to be safe.
  • Emissions light came on recently, stayed on for a couple of days but after a long drive turned itself off - theres an error code logged on the ecu but my reader can't decifer it and according to the guys at quick fit their reader won't be able to tell me which sensor is at fault either (useful).
  • Poor MPG
  • Occasionaly rough idle
When the emissions light came on i bought a lamba sensor to rectify the problem, but as it then went off i havent got round to fitting it yet.

I'm fairly certain having read the plethera of threads about it on here that its gotta be one of the lambda sensors thats gone AWOL but i'm not sure which?

As i understand it the sensor before the cat controls idle/fuel mixture - the one after merely monitors. Which sensor is most likely to cause the above symptoms?
