Motherboard/GFX card question/issues...

  182 Trophy 019/500
I bought a new GFX card NVIDIA GeForce 6200 and on the box it said it needed PCI 2.0, which I thought great that would work fine with my motherboard.

At the moment it's working fine through my TV (connected via S-VIDEO until I can afford a LCD TV) but when I play a video, either in media player, quicktime or on the web the computer goes to 100% CPU usage. Usually the only way to stop it is to force it to switch off.

Any one help me?

Note: The motherboard is a Asus A7V8X-MX with AMD 2400+ 1.99GHz

Your motherboard is an AGP motherboard so it there any reason you got a PCI 2.0 (basically very old technology) graphics card?

The card will work with your motherboard but the AGP port is a dedicated "Advanced Graphics Port" and the correct card will be much better.

Regarding the 100% cpu usage that sounds like the drivers haven't been installed properly.

The only reason I got PCI 2.0 is because I wanted to be able to connect it through the TV in my room, I don't play many games so I don't need an expensive GFX card.

As I went for this one will it cause more problems when I upgrade my tv? Or would you recommend changing it to a AGP card?

Thanks for the help by the way!

Nearly any graphics card (PCI, AGP, PCI-E) will have s-vhs output on it and you're not doing your pc many favours by using a limited PCI card. The only people that buy PCI cards normally are people with antique pc's and no other option.

Your Geforce 6200 for example is available in AGP aswell as PCI so it's not like you'd have to buy an expensive card.

Maybe I will look at buying the AGP one then.

Is the Geforce 6200 a good card? Or would you recommend another card?

It's a basic card so it depends what you need from it.

Is it a good card for web browsing? Yes.

Is it a good card for gaming? Hell no
.

Well if i'm gonna get one I may aswell make it a good one i.e good for games etc as I don't want to have to buy another in a hurry.

Recommend any? Then I will stop with the questions!

lol I don't mind the questions but I have to ask another back...

How much do you want to spend?

Without knowing I could easily say get yourself a 7800GTX 512 but thats £350+

Either a Nvidia 6600GT or an ATI x800GT, both arround the £100 and will be much better than the 6200.

They will all be fine and just to put any last doubts at rest you can see they all support "TV out" for your current tv and if/when you get an LCD you can use the DVI connection instead.
