Motherboard Recommendation - for the system builders!

So Nvidia are producing dodgy cards? POS? That's all you had to say, you could have saved a few paragraphs. I only took issue with your "POS" comment about the 7950GX2, yet it's now turned into a pissing contest about 3DMarks?...and I'm the warrior?

I posted a first score in another thread if I recall which had nothing to do with this one. I didn't expect someone in another thread to use it as a lever in a debate about a graphics card that you can't even buy anymore. Oh well. You're right and I'm wrong. Happy? lol :D

  Better than yours. C*nt.
It was a poorly executed good idea - I apologise for my being blunt. I've been up all night the last 3 trying to get a Vista installation that'll run the 170.** drivers without bluescreening on this 8900.

It's all good, no need to appologise at all :D

For the record, I only ever meant to point out that a dual GPU single slot card isn't a new idea. That post was quite short, and I believe factually correct. Granted, ATI seem to have taken the technology and improved upon it now, and fair play to them, but the 7950GX2 was far from rubbish. It certainly served me very well. I'm no fanboy, believe me. If ATI currently made a card that I wanted, I'd have bought one. I simply bought what I felt suited my needs and budget.

Anyway, I'm definitely looking forward to OCing the new machine, but TBH there's no real need at this stage. 3DMarks are a good guide when building/improving, but since I'm a gamer and not a benchmarker...

Ah, but the dual GPU single PCB card IS a new idea, and that's where we need to be going. 10 years ago 'dual core' was two Socket As on one motherboard (I remember my old Supermicro MP 2000+ board!) and the 7950GX2 was in effect that sort of technology - well out of place really. Fair enough allowing people with far too much money and free time link two graphics cards but I firmly believed that the GX2 was underengineered.

And I can tell you the 8900 is too. But it does look pretty on screen for 5 minutes before crashing!

If you want SLI nvidia boards are your only option right now. So 680i or 780i.

What is wrong with your 780i that it is not working more information would be good that way we could maybe help you out getting it sorted.

Well essentially there is a terrible implementation iof quad core support on this chipset, it's all over the forums. Built the machine perfectly and it wouldn't load vista onto it. The install would hang the whole time, tested all the memory and after reading asus forums appears i was wasting my time, annoyingly worst support is on the q6600 which i have.

i have an nvidia 8800 gta so crossfire is a bit wasted on me, know of a reliable 680i boars anyway?...not sure if to go sli now, the support on the chipsets are for the 780's.

No problems with mine running quad-core on the same mobo. I do have a slightly different processor though.

Sorry to see you haven't managed to sort this out yet David :(

yeh i know apparently it's a specific issue with the q6600 and i'm not spending £800 on a processor. It also has a number of other issues undervolting ram, not utilising all four cores blah blah blah. Any suggestions on a motherboard mate?

well according to the evga forums it'll work ok. it's the asus implementation of it qhich is the issue from what i can see... really wish it had worked first time, but if you look on the asus forums it's a nightmare. You should be ok though as you don't have a q6600

So, nVidias line up was half-assed, and still is? Are you on crack? No doubt the 3870x2 is a great card, but that doesn't mean everything else that you don't have, or never have had, is a "POS".

And there was me, worrying that the 'ol Munson had gone soft in recent months.

Good to see that he still can get riled, every now and then! LOL! ;)
