motorpoint 182 - £11699

i think youre trying to kid us again Jon. ;) Aftermarket products devalue the car 9 times out of 10 and most people end up trading in a motor because thats the easiest way to go. I nearly bought a second hand 172 privately last year cos its value was massively reduced being a grey....

To most punters a grand isnt a lot in any case, particularly when theyre financing it over 3 years...

Jees, its bad enough selling a motor privately without the service booklet saying supplied by Costas in Cyprus and the V5 saying 1st owned by grey importer whos now gone bust!!!!

I think youll find a they are classed as parallel imports not grey, and I saved over £2k. There are still issues insuring grey imports from Japan and the like, where as all insurance companies recognise cars sold by supermarkets as what they are, UK cars just bought over on someone elses boat. ;)

I paid cash, so thats money sat in my bank not someone elses. When I come to get rid of the car it will be worth less, but thats fair enough I paid less.

My car is now 1 year old with 16k on the clock and Ive been offered £10k by my local Honda dealer who know its origins. Now tell me only loosing £2600 in a year on a Renault isnt good!!

Maybe youve had some bad luck adder.

i once bought an STI from Japan and made £3k when I sold it 6 months later. I saved over £10k on this car! Ive lost £1k on a Leon 20VT that I ran for 18months and 18k miles. So perhaps Ive had even more luck than you Lee ;)

I also pay cash for my cars. I used to enjoy buying imports but markets change mate, youre not smelling the cheese!!!

I agree, markets do change. When I purchased mine no dealer was prepared to offer me a decent price, unlike today where they do.

At the end of the day Im far too lazy to go about importing a car myself.

I have af friend who used to bring over Jap Imports and sell them on for profit. He cant do that anymore as the risk of loosing out is too high.

As for luck, I bought my car for me. Sod whats worth when Im done with it as long as Ive enjoyed owning it.:D

very true, as long as youre happy and enjoying your motoring thats the main thing!

By the way both those motors I mentioned were brand new imports!!! I also only lost £500 on a brand new Toledo V5 after 18 months when the Mrs smashed it up. Man i used to absolutely love imports!!!

But yeah, markets change. This is NOT a good deal from Motorpoint!!!

I say let us buyers get together on the 182 Group buy and get the real best deal from a Renault dealer!!!! lol :)

Adder, I agree some aftermarket products will devalue a car more as it can be an "unknown quantity", but it will depend on the level of aftermarket add-ons. I had no problems selling mine with Eibachs on, but then that was the only modifacation I made (and was well worth the money IMO). But at the end of the day, money saved is money saved and you cant argue with that, especially in my case and many others, a saving of over £2000 and a reduction of a £100 over a UK car at resale.

In the case of imported 172s, the differences compared to a UK car with insurance, warrenty, servicing/parts costs etc is negligible, and I think youll find that 9 out of 10 people would rather save money on purchase and worry about resale value later.

IMO, Imports and car supermarkets are great creating competition and driving prices down. More and more people are realising the saving to be had and its only UK dealers who have sour grapes as they are loosing sales to these supermarkets. About time too as generally its regarded that the UK are over charged massively compared to the rest of Europe. UK specd cars are no longer the "holy grail" as dealers make out to be and will do anything to get you to buy a UK car and thus its the UK dealers who have let the "cheese smelling" go to their heads with their cheesy sales pitch.

9 out of 10 people would rather have a UK car and not worry about all that stuff. Which you can now get with the brokers. Or even some dealers. Imports have had their day.

Good advice D-CUP.You guys are having a laff buying a grey when theres only a grand to be saved! Ive had four (non Renault) import cars from as far away as Japan; also Ireland and Holland. The point about saving big bucks on an import is you go direct to the foreign dealer yourself and cut out the middle man. A grey is always going to more difficult to move on and Ive heard stories of people losing a fortune on some metal; Renault particularly.

rubbish, theyre parallel imports!! not grey imports A MASSIVE difference, and lets be fair, uk reno cars are dealer imports!!! and I saved nealy 3k on uk list price last year, well worth it!!!!

my eibacks fitted with no probs.

i went out in a Demo car 172 02 (October) before purchasing my MKII172 53reg in september of last year... it had miles on the clock, the brakes squeeked ((ive never heard this on mine)) and i assume it must have had some knackering..

the garage was Renault dixon in york. Thr salesman offered me 13K for it !?!?

it doesnt matter if it an import as long as you are confident its the same as UK spec. The car they tried to flog was about 5K over price, considering Age/milege/reps weekend car/hard demo drives. It put me off buying a 172, so i went home and didnt think i could ever afford a new car.. they wouldnt even take my car as a trade in??? they had put me off buying one, even though the test drive went well.

So i went to motorpoint Derby. traded my car in. Got a brand new 172. They put a sixCD changer in. CAT1 Thacham. And i gave them £11800 bankers draft.

So.. Renault offer me 13K for a knackerd Demo car. I get a brand new ((with new features)) for 12K ???

NO CONTEST..

Yeah, back then imports were fine. I thought of getting an import aswell. But then the brokers arrived and did similar prices on UK cars. I wouldnt dream of getting an import 182 now when the brokers are so cheap.

The reason I bought my 172 from Motorpoint was because all the Renault dealers in the area that I visited or spoke to werent willing to budge on the price. In fact Renault Manchester said if I wasnt willing to pay the sticker price I should buy one of their 12 month old second hand ones for the same price as my brand new Motorpoint car. I told them for the right price they could have a deposit there and then and a draft for the full amount the next day. They obviously didnt want to do business so f*ck em!

I saved 2 grand on the purchase price and have had Renault do warranty work on it.

^^^

agree with andrewm + D-CUP. i didnt even know about Brokers so import was my only choice. nxt time il try brokers but will not rule out import.
