IMAP server, copy to server, copy back is how I did it. (if mail is to be stored by each person)
As for using an IMAP server, I do.. and it's setup in a way that I use Mail mainly (in OSX) but Thunderbird (I use it on Windows) uses the same folders for Sent, Drafts , Archive etc.. so they both work fine.
Just started using T-Bird at home this week. Really like the look and feel of it, though simple things in OE like aliases take a bit more effort to solve in T-Bird.
Still, for free, you can't knock it. I'm nearly a full blown user of Firefox now too - cursed IE!
Thunderbird used to be great. Since 1.5 came out it's terrible, I have to close it at least once a day, because it goes upto 100% CPU for no reason. And don't even think about having a mailbox over 2Gb. It's not geared towards heavy use, which is a shame. It's still great for home use though.
They really are two different things though. We used Exchange 2003 and Outlook 2003 clients here at work. My .pst file is approx 300MB in size and there are other users with much more email than me.
At home though, I think I've around 25MB (max) email and I tend to keep on top of emptying deleted and sent items and stuff. For that, T-Bird is very good indeed.
