Mr Clutch

has anyone had any dealings with them before. The branch in Reading to be precise. i need the clutch replacing on my 2002 172 and they have quoted as very very good price. I did have the clutch cable replaced there and they seem okay just this obviously is a much bigger job. Other than Mr Clutch are there any companies anyone knows that could carry this job oput for around the £300 mark

many thanks

They did my 16v for half what Renault quoted and they completed the job in half the time they quoted.

Can any one really knock them for that?

I tried the Mr Clutch in Southend. They quoted a very good time on it (and price) but when I brought it in they said they couldnt do it because of supposed health and safety problems with my nitrous lines being in the engine bay. I showed them there wasnt even a nitrous bottle connected and they were just empty plastic lines but they didnt want to tackle it. I dont think mechanics that stupid should really be allowed near my clutch anyway!

There are basically two ways of doing a valver clutch. Remove the engine and box and split them on the bench, do the clutch change properly then put it all back. Or the bodge way which a lot of people do because it saves time and effort, which is AFAIK to crack them apart while still in the engine bay, slip the old clutch out, slip the new one in and hope for the best. Problem is the proper alignment tool that you need to do the job well wont fit in if you try the second method, so you could end up needing to do the whole job again fairly soon, and theres no way of knowing until it goes.

Bear in mind Im no transmission expert, this is just what Ive been told and it seems to make sense.

As far as the 172 goes, ask them if they do it in exactly the same way as Renault would do it - find out how many hours Renault quote and ask them if theirs will take the same amount of time and if its vastly less, ask them why. If youre happy with the way they will do it, and they can guarantee in writing that the clutch will sustain no premature damage using their fitting method then go for it.

well i know they take alot less time than renault but i cant justify paying near on £1k for a new clutch on a 2yr old car so i gues they look the better option. they also offer a 2yr no questions asked garuentee so i guess if anything did go wrong it would be replaced/fixed. they also specialise in clutches so id hope they knew pretty much what they were doing. To be honest i wouldnt trust a renault tech anyway so i suppose it just a case of taking th erisk. i know people who have had work doen before and they have been happy. Just wanted to check if anyone of here had had any work done.

Nick - got mine done at that very branch - they gave me a full 2 year 20k mile warrenty with it. It drove fine as well.

£298 - Renault and other places wanted £500+

How many miles has your car done then? I had my clutch replaced by reno on the warranty!! My car had done 15K (which i dont feel is enough for the clutch to go), so went down and kicked up and they did it all on the warranty for me.

car had done 35k when i complained and is now on 38k. They said if i paid them £950 to have it done if it was a faulk with the clutch then they would pay 40% if not them tough luck and the £950 would come from my pocket. So rather than take the risk and still pay almost £600 i thought id go somewhere else. I personally think a clutch should last longer than 2yrs and 35k miles but renault obviously dont

a friend of mine went to the place in reading. the did a clutch change on an escort and quoted her cheaper than ford did but they didnt seem to put the clutch back together properly. cant actually remember what was wrong with it after she took it to mr clutch but after hearing what she had to say i wouldnt go there but its up to you.

oh btw what colour 172 u got?

its a silver 172. The problem i have is i cant justify the cots of renault especially after the trouble i have had with them in the past. the clutch isnt slipping seems to have seized inside but it will need to be changed eventually so i guess its gonnna cost me wherever i go
