Must Resist!

  MKV GTI
Well over the past few days i have suddenly felt this overwhelming urge to spend some £££ on my car and as i am saving for a house deposit it is driving me mad and i am trying desperatly to resist modifying my car (anymore than it is)!

I have been constantly looking on ktec, yozzasport, etc etc and have provisianally wrote up a list of what parts i want to buy and where i want my car to be within a year or so, although the list is not wallet friendly to say the least, so here i am stuck in a prediciment(sp) of wether to lay off saving as much money per month and treating the car to a few goodies.

Obviously i know a house comes first but waiting a few more months to move out cant do no harm, i just really really feel the need to buy some presents for the car, or am i just cheating myself here??

Anybody else in the same boat? Im sure there is a fair few who are in this prediciment lol!

are you buying the house on your own or with your other half if you have one? Could be a simple decision if its the latter...!

i have a gf although will be buying the house myself as would much rather own the house in my own right, also i am the one saving the deposit, so thats the only way for me to go tbh.

I am in the same boat.

Have probably only spent 10% of my wages on myself in the last 6 months.

Really want a house though, and I think DIY will take over my hobby of cars.

Saying that, I wrote a list of £700 quids worth of stuff I want to buy for the cup this month. Has been a while since I have had just the one car, so decided to go back to concentrating on one so want to make this one last.

That's my point I don't want to get to the stage were I am spending silly amounts of money on the car even though i would like too given the chance, it all adds up lol!

I just feel as though it's my last chance to do somthing that I want with my money before the bills associated with house ownership strip me of all my cash!

I think you should keep saving for the house. But spend a liitle on the car, take your time and keep it in control. If you save loads of money for a house but aren't having fun then you will start resenting the whole idea!

Get the house then use any spare cash you have to save for car stuff.

A house is a much better investment compared to parts for your car!

you have a very valid point will, maybe I'm bein greedy and want it all too quickly!

So far I have the following on the list:

recaro trendlines
matched inlets
jms induction setup
rstuning remap (fancy a proper map rather than generic)
sell my ktr exhaust and sports cat for yozza silenced Decat and catback
system.
Cf splitter (matt)
ktr engine mounts
powerflex dogbone bushes
powerflew suspension bushes
ktr top mounts
kw varient1 coilovers
and a whiteline arb

as you can see that's around 3ks worth of work, although will do what I can myself fitting wise! Also the new jms inlet manifold is appealing to me obviously that would rule out me needing to match inlets and fit jms ind setup so that route could be slightly better vfm given the better power and torque outputs of the jms manifold!

Decisions, decisions.

Do the coilovers and seats and leave it at that and be happy with it IMO.

Start spending silly amounts on tuning and you will regret it later when you wish that extra £1k went towards the house deposit.

coilovers, seats and splitter then save for the house i reckon, gives you smiles in the meantime while your saving ;)

As house prices are at the moment relatively cheap, the quicker you get one the better. So save every penny you can now and leave the car alone for a while. Unless you are rich, you like most of us can't have it all. Happy house hunting.

I feel your pain. Been saving for over a year or so now. I could buy a 200/R26R outright with what i've saved, but need to sort a new house. Very hard lol :(

This is the most sensible thing written, providing you can get the mortgage. There are not that many opportunities to get a good jump onto the housing ladder. In real terms, once you are on, it matters less whether the prices go up or down for moving as your property will follow suit. When you are making the first jump though, you want prices to crash to allow you to get the best property you can so, assuming you can get the mortgage, enjoy the car as standard and go for the property.

Even better, sell your 182 and buy a £ 1k cheap runabout for a year or two. House will come quicker and then see where you are financially.

  Nothing at the mo :(
fuk i know how you feel

me and the misses moving into our new place on 1st july... so i cant spend anything ><

I see you live in Preston so housing should be a lot cheaper there, Down sarf you can't buy a 1 bed flat for under £110 k.

There have been some very good points posted here it really made me think about were my priorities do and should lie!

I suppose I will have to listen to my head more than my heart and just suck it up and keep puttng the money away, it's just I can't come to terms with the fact that I will have very little or nil cash spare to buy a new car/ mod my 182 when I get my house so was jus thinking about don somthing now whilst I still have the money as a sort of reward for saving!

If I do decide to buy some parts for the car il keep costs down and just go for the coilies and seats as I'm not too bothered about the power as it costs a fortune just to get to the "book power" of 182ps, I think I'd be more than happy with the car then!:approve:

Yes Sussex is expensive. I assume your renting, £500 a month can get you £100k mortgage but you do need a decent deposit, thats the hard part.

You trying to say in a polite manner that oop norths a s**t hole lol!;)

your right though house prices are much more reasonble up here, should be able to get a 2/3 bed semi with gardens and garage for between 120k and 150k dependant on area.

I think what you have decided is the most sensible tbh. It depends how much you are saving and how close you are to the house already.

If you do buy something for the car then just get as little as you need, if thats coilovers and seats then thats a good way to go, its not overly expensive and shouldnt dent the savings that hard.

The problem once you have your house is you have to pay for it and trust me home improvements will come first, they bug you the same way car improvements do but all day every day!

Housing in Preston is relatively cheap luckily for us, i move into a new place on the docks on Friday so no money on the car for me for next few months either!

I almost choked reading that but for the wrong reasons :S. Try finding a flat for £110k anywhere near a city down sarf. In London, you can double it and still struggle.

I'm looking to buy a small 300k house too in London

How much deposit does one usually have to put down?
