Sounds like the plastic impeller on the waterpump.
If you pop the top coolant hose off the expansion tank and stick it back in the lid and get someone to rev it you'll be able to tell 100% as the flow rate of the water should change.
Coolant returns into the tank at idle, but from reading online it does sound like the water pump is failing when revved over 2k.
