Sounds like the plastic impeller on the waterpump.

If you pop the top coolant hose off the expansion tank and stick it back in the lid and get someone to rev it you'll be able to tell 100% as the flow rate of the water should change.

Common fault, we've done a few.

I'll buy it off you (and collect it on a truck) but it would need to be cheap. Let me know if you get stuck with it and want a quick hassle free sale.

Coolant returns into the tank at idle, but from reading online it does sound like the water pump is failing when revved over 2k.

Cheers for the offer Dan, if I don't get any interest at a grand then I think I'll get it fixed though. Typical that it happened 3 days after advertising it on pistonheads for £1750.

I bet the pump impeller is still intact just loose on the pump drive.
