MY CAR IS DEAD!!!!!!!

  Clio Gtt

i just flushed the cooling system and realised i ran outof anti freeze so i went to the shop and left my bonnet open, when i was at the shop it rained.

the engine is soaked and when i tried to start it it spluttered exhaust popped and died then triend again loud bang from the under the air filter and steam was rising from it.

now nothing dosent even turn over.

thats what i considering.

i think the starter motor has gone because it wont even turn over.

whats the cheapist i can pic up a 5 or 1.4rt engine up.

if i can get one cheap enough i wil put it in next week.

check the plug holes for water, then check the battery leads are tight, then hit the starter like brun says

Most obvious thing is the plug holes if you havent checked them already. About the most vulnerable (to water) part of the engine on a 16v but I dont know about a 1.2...

ive takin the plugs out and there was moister that smelt like petrol on them it was clear moister. that did not work

i checked bat and hit the starter. still no go

i am gonna try the dizzy cap when it stops raining.

what else??

could this be the head gasket?

The old trick with the starter motor was stick it in reverse and rock the car backwards and forwards just in case it has jammed up and then give it a shot - otherwise its looking like Mr Reno im afraid.

Does the ignition come on? If not then its an earth lead or main fusebox feed, possibly lots of fuses blown but you say you have checked those.

If it does come on, do you get a click/tick when you turn the key to position 3? If no then starter solenoid gone or wiring damaged between battery and solenoid. If you do get a click (its quite quiet, get someone to try to start car while you listen) then starter has gone or its badly earthed.

I put my money on an earth fault. Its a common problem, especially when water and/or mud and dirt are involved.

( i assume your battery is fully charged...)

Just re-read your post. sounds like an ignition relay if you had a bang and smoke.steam. Do you have a relay box near the airbox like a 16v?

Take the cover off, disconnect battery, and look for burnt out wiring or damaged relays, then repair or replace as needed.

i do geta quiet click when i turn the key, coming from the bay somwhere.

what you think i should do?

Tough one without seeing the car. Charge the battery for a start.

Gotto be a bad earth from engine (or gearbox, these have the same ground as they are linked) to the battery id say.

Get a jump lead and connect one black end to battery neagative. then connect the other end of the black lead to the block somewhere. Ideally where there is no paint, like exhaust manifold. Or wherever you get a good connection on the block.

As the starter earths through the block back to ground if the ground is too high resistance your starter wont turn. If it still wont go then im not really sure, i would say the starter motor itself has gone but seems too much of a coincidence to me.

Let me know what happens and ill try to help and get it sorted for ya.

i conected the lead to the bat- and the other end to just behind the gearbox.

it made the same click and then a different noise which i can only discribe as robotic, like when a cd is loading????????

Bloody hell, not really sure then. See if you can push start the car, either tow it or get some friendly neighbours!

If it starts, you know the problem is in the starter wiring. If it doesnt start, there is an ignition problem somewhere. Do all the electrics still work?

Call a garage and talk them through the problem, they may give you some other pointers over the phone. If it wont push start and your not that confident with car wiring then get an auto electrician on it. Not the best way, we all like ot sort out problems ourself but you dont want to make it anyworse.

Sorry cant be more help over e-mail!

we tried push starting erlier it started, splutered then died within 10 seconds.

all the lectrics work.

cheers for the help

Need to have a look at the car really. From that i would say replace rotor arm and dizzy cap. then dry out plug leads and coil pack and all connections.

Check your relays, if you can spot any visible damage (unlikely) then get some relays from a scrap yard and put them in.

Really cant suggest anything else other than methodically replace parts, but that gets expensive.
