my car is nearly dead... help

my 172 is in at reno tomorrow (again) for a knackerd engine mount and a strange clicking noise that they seem to think is the water pump on its way out.

however this morning on my way to work coming out of a roundabout it just died. it was like i was in a high gear trying to pull off, the thing just spluttered and would not rev over 2.5 k? i stopped, turned the engine off had a quick check and everything seemed fine.

im sure i have read people having similar problems on here, any ideas as im close to sending my car to the clio scrap heap in the sky. cheers.:confused:
 


if it would not rev over 2.5k then the car had gone into "limp mode"did the engine management light not light up, the toxic fume sensor would light up

this is seriously dodgy to drive as the car has no power whatsoever and people dont expect u to pull off so slowly,basically its just about driveable to renop where the fault will be logged onto main computer

basically something majorly wrong has occured under the engine so its gone into this mode to protect itself. i sh*t u not this happened on our first 172 loadsa times till they could never fix it when we had it and they gave us a new one. dont know how our old 172 is doin but i know its on the road somewhere

Sounds like ECU in limp mode - happens when it detects an engine-threatening error. Your dealer should be able to find out what it was from the ECU error table.

as soon as i turned the engine back on again it was fine but i did not take it over 3.5 k. in your experience will it be ok to do another 50miles??

like i said its booked in at reno tomorrow for the other problems so i will get them to check it out then if its been logged on the ecu.

wongy008, was your old clio blue?

it had been running sweet when i first got it but now its one thing after another, it s only done 34k!

Jim, you need to thrash it some more mate! mine had a spate of doing that. It would appear like the fuel pipe had come disconnected or something (it hadnt but felt like it) and the acclerator just slowed the car down until it cut out etc. Then the car stank of eggs (CAT). Just turned it back on and revved her up. Only has done this 3 times and the last time was ages ago.

What does the clicking water pump sound like?

i cant trash it as the engine is trying to jump through the bulkhead and join me in the cabin (engine mount problem).

the water pump click sounds like a click.;) on tick over it sounds like a knackered bearing on one of the auxiliary belt wheels, 3 quick clicks then a pause then 3 more and so on.

great fun eh?
