  LOTS!

Been to see a few Clios over the last week or two and not managed to find one quite right yet but Ive got a good feeling about the next one - going to see it on Tuesday next week so fingers crossed Ill be a 172 owner by the middle of next week! :)

Can you lot give any advice of common things to look out for on the 172 (Mk2)? I know the usual things to look out for but is there anything Clio specific? Its got 35k on the clock... any problems at that kind of age?

Finally, Im guessing the 35k miles means its due a service very soon and Ive seen people talking about the £500 figure  Is this a standard cost or could it be done cheaper? Or could I do some of it myself?

Just get a decent independent garage to do the service.

Will be cheaper and theyll probably do a better job!

Good point. May struggle to find a good one around here but its still a good point! :D

What about 172 warning signs? Common tell tale faults etc.

Erm common faults with 172s

Headlight washer balls falling out
Leaking Screenwash resoviors
Cracking rubber on the steering wheel
banging noise on hard acceleration, wheelspin etc.
Front jacking points failing and collapsing
Air con can need re-gassed sometimes so switch it on and check for cool air.
Standard renault mats dont last very long, so dont expect them to be there anymore.
4K rattle (funnily enough at 4000rpm from the exhaust)

erm... thats everything I can think off the top of my head.

Oh and you will probably get a small clunk when putting it into first gear sometimes.

:D Excellent!

And those faults are attributable to??? Particularly:

Banging noise on hard acceleration?

4K Rattle?

What causes those? and are they deal-breakers (i.e. dont touch it with a pole situation)?

Banging iss caused by engine hitting subframe under wheelspin. Ktec do uprated bushes I believe, but as long as you dont give it death in first when its wet youll be fine.

4k rattle is the centre section of the exhaust coming loose and resonating at 4000rpm . Common fault apparently, but ive not had it in 14000 miles of motoring from new.

I do lots of short journeys, give it death whenever possible and have never had any trouble. In fact its the most reliable car Ive ever owned (touches wood)

Trim and dash rattles are to be expected, but are generally nothng serious and as you have obviously owned french before youll know all about them!!. If the rattles start getting on your nerves turn up the tunes and put your foot down - youll soon forget about them!!

The only little niggle Ive had was a rattling passenger seat. Renault replaced it under warrenty and its been fine since.

As far as deal breakers go, its the same as any other car. Look for any signs of crash damage. Get under it, inside it all round it. If your not mechanically minded get a friend who is to go with you and look round the car. If you dont know anyone, consider paying for a car inspection from the AA. Having said that, as long as it has full service history a car that age with average mileage should be fine.

Expect there to be stone chips on the bumper, and gravel rash at the bottom of the rear arches. The paint finish isnt brilliant and chips quite easily.

Make sure you go on a good long test drive, long enough to get it warmed up, and give it a bit of a thrash.

Good Luck.

Sound advice - nice one.

Always feels like a gamble getting a 2nd hand car but tbh, I think you can sometimes tell if its not quite right if if you dont understand the mechanical reason.

I know enough to satisfy my own piece of mind anyway so thatll do! Will keep posting.

Certainly. Go on as lengthy a test drive as possible. Offer to put some petrol in if needs be. And make sure you take it past 5000rpm!!:devilish:
