Im going to be doing this over xmas so i need some help!

I want to spray my handles, door strips, boot lock basically anything thats plastic black so it never fades and I dont have to back to black everyday..

What do I use to get a matt black finish? what about that hammerite in a spray can jobby will that be matt?

Tried a tester weeks ago on a spare door strip with some plasticoat back to black stuff for bumpers - first time i went to the jet wash it came flying off!

Thanks

Youll need to really do your homework on this Daz. There will be guides on the internet about spraying plastic but basically it goes something like...

Firstly all the plastic will need prepping. So youll need to throughly clean with an alcohol based cleaner. You dont want any grease, or moisture on them.

Then roughen up all the plastics using a hard sandpaper, youll need plenty of it so buy a big pack!

Then once its all roughened up, Id use a plastic primer. Say 2-3 coats of that, roughen each coat up in between as it helps it to bond.

Then using a light sand paper sand off the final coat of primer, which still roughing it up slightly.

Then youll need say 4-5 coats of paint. Remember your doing 5 coats here so you dont need to get it all covered first time. 5 light dustings of paint will give a better finish that 1 heavy sloppy wet one (oooh err!).

Then youll need to wait and allow it time to dry a bit, before laquering. Id recommed 3-4 coats of laquer.

Bung it in the airing cupboard/somewhere warm for a few days to dry.

Bobs your uncle.

Ok so you may already know all that and I didnt read you topic very carefully but halfords do matt and gloss paints mate. They do plenty of different primers and all the prepping stuff youll need.

^^^ the thing that worrys me is obviously you can have the mattest if matt black but as soon as you whack laquer on its instant shiny time!

I was kind of hoping for a wham bam affair would quite like to keep the plastics texture too - see why im struggling! heh

ok daz, do you want them just matt black finish with no shine, black with laquer(which will look very poor), or colour codin them?

then ill go from that

if you spray it with matt black paint, and then use laquer youll get a matt black laquered finish.

if you use gloss black paint, and then use laquer, youll get a gloss black laquered finish.

Use the right materials and youll get the right finish.

if you just wanna matt black the parts, give them a good prep with p400 (i recommend) clean em up well. couple coats of plastic primer on the door strips (only thing that possibly could need some). then use whatever aersosol matt black youve bought. i went to my local car shop n got 2 cans of " Hycote Bumper & Trim Paint Black " comes ina green can.

Did my scuttle panel, boot lock, door handles, sunroof surround, and wing mirror plastic.

i didnt use plastic primer as it dont need it. your mouldings possibly could need it, but not essential.
