Need help - trying to buy a 182 - number on engine

Hi - can anyone help? I am about to buy a BG 182 and have noticed that the engine cover is missing and there are a series of numbers painted on the top of the engine in red. Kind of makes me think that it was some sort of reference number for a replacement engine fitted. I didn't picture the numbers on my camera but just thought it looked a bit dodgy.

Anyone got any thoughts or am I paranoid.

Thanks - Andrew........

Unless the seller managed to source an engine on very similar to milage, if the car has a full or nearly full service history, would you not be able to try and spot anything that doesn't look right? I know it's not full-proof but will possibly give some indication...

I wouldn't worry about lack of engine cover. Has it got previous MOTs for mileage ref?
you know it's not a Cup, as specified in advert don't you?

It has mots to support and I know its not a cup the garage are not really experts just been a trade in for a scooby. Its difficult in Scotland working 6 days a week to get the chance to travel to find one but it is a lovely example and I know its overpriced coz I sell cars for a living but sometimes you need to just bite the bullet. I would like it £500 cheaper but I wouldn't lose it for £500.......

its at least £500 over priced. If you do go for it, check the engine number matches the original paperwork.

Where aboots do I find the engine number??

Ha ha. I havent a clue either. Maybe coz I sell cars not work on them. Feel a bit of a plonker. Sure it will be fine just need someone to say its a nice car and buy it before I buy something else.........

As Fred has said you will be VERY lucky to see it - down the front of the block on the gearbox side it where it would be, but it will be gone by now

Just bought it anyways for £3k. Coilovers ordered, cage and carbon door cards - then track ready.....

Did you not think it would of been a good idea to give it a good drive first and see what other issues it may have before chucking money on modifications?

A small test drive is nothing compared to living with it for a month

Thing is that it is a 3rd car and bought for the track. I will do about 2000 miles a year if that. I guess I will need to see how it goes and I expect some things to go wrong. Massive folder of history though and had all the work done when it needed. The last owner must have spent thousands. I have only bought coilovers so far - I will wait before I cage it. I may need to ask your advice about some stuff as time goes on though.

Cheers - Andrew.
