Needing a new gearbox

A few days ago, my clio started making a very loud noise as if something is stuck are broken underneath my car, so i left it parked up. Later that day i found out it was the end of the gear box, so now i have to replace this costing around £500 (part & labour), does anyone know what could of caused this?

too much abuse more than likely, the gearboxs are the single worst part of the 172/182 clios

what double clutching? does it help on other cars like a 1.2

check gear box oil i have just last week had the same problem and i am having a big job finding a 1.4 maxim gear box i need to now if the 1.2 would fit from the same year 1997

i dropped a cog next to a 182 on the weekend and killed the diff
