Replace crappy AOL modem with a Rangemax wireless router (If AOL allow, are they still anal about what routers you can use?)

Presumably you have power from the same source as the house. Have you thought about using the mains networking kit you can buy nowadays..

Turns your mains electrical cable into network cable.

just get a wireless access point, plug it into your modem/router, then get a wireless receiver for your xbox, and thats it. you plug the ethernet into the access point from your router/modem, and then the xbox connects to that.

i think the new networking grade would be, i didnt realise it was 50m. If possible run Cat5 cable.

Rangemax (or equivalent) should be fine at 50m (providing there's not a forest in the way).
How about thick stone masonary of a farm building? Providing it's got that of course lol.

It "shouldn't" make a lot of difference. I guess the obvious suggestion would be to place the router near a window in the outbuilding if possible.

Either that or he buys 50m of Cat5 or signs up for a second ISP for the main house.

main house is the same phone number and system so would a second service provider work?

the guy from aol help said the best bet is to run ethernet cable all the way from the PC directly to the Xbox??

is that possible? its a bit of an arse to do like...
