new discs/pads

...for the ol RT, my Ktec pads/discs havent worked that well, got "blueies" on the discs and they have warped, with the alloys dont really wanna get standard discs again - any other manufacturers apart from ktec that make straight swaps? also want a different pad,EBC doesnt seem to have the best reputation here - ferodo?

hi steve,

just wondering, how long did it take before your discs warped? I just got some new standard solid discs and some KTR EBC pads and am bedding in, only done about 100mile and they seem to be working better and better. I just dont wanna test them really until ive done a few more miles but from what ive heard KTRs pads are pretty good.

A few people have slated the EBC greenstuff pads, but the EBC blackstuff seem to do a good job. From what ive read theyre pretty much standard pads that perform a lot better when hard braking or when braking at high speeds. Also, they dont give off much dust as u probably know :)

As for other pads, not really sure, if u want a big improvement i think the common theme is to get a set of 16v calipers, vented discs and pads.

done about 10k miles in them, tho when i fitted them i didnt make sure that the hub flange was flush, may be the reason for it, also the blue streaks (correct me if im wrong) are down to overheating of the disc, which could either be it sticking to the pad (i.e. becuase its warped, constantly pushing on pad) or becuase of over-excitable braking(!) tho i cant see it being this, as theyre surely made to take extra abuse?!

the search isnt workign for me at the mo, if you get the valver calipers, do you need a new carrier aswell or are the bolts the same?

I would just get stock gear.

Anyway a good upgrade over the bendix setup is to use Girlings from a 19, they are minature versions of the 16V calipers and are very, very good.

Anywya you need the shorter bolts for girlings, the bolts from the hub carrier to the caliper carrier.

by the way, beware that when changing calipers the bolts might be stuck. Tried to take the caliper totally off but one of the bolts started twanging as it was slowly coming off i.e. close to snapping off!!!

In the end i managed to get one bolt of and move the caliper and get the new one in.

HTH

i take it the 19 girlings are the same size as bendix i have tho? usually im not bothered about looks, i.e bodykit etc. but here i reckon that a little sh*tty solid disc looks a bit bad behind nice alloys, hence why i bought the ktec discs. but i suppose i could put the valver stuff on for thicker, bigger discs. then i could just leave it for stock valver items.

seperate question - when i brake hard on my current setup, i hear like a groaning sound, not a squeaking or metal/metal sound but like a rumble. its sommit to do with the brakes, but can someone tell me what is actually happening for this sound to occur?

steve_rt I have a pair of 16v caliper carriers and newish calipers for sale They will fit directly to the existing hubs. We only fit TAR-OX discs and pads as they are the best that we have tried so far with very good results. Available with either fast road or ralle pads.
