New discs

After 11,000 miles. Car is grinding and squeeking and Quick Fit say I need new discs, b*****d thing. Am I that bad a driver?

Also should mention that Quick Fit have quoted me £130 for new discs and pads, does this sound right?

11k seems a bit quick but then again depends how you drive. My pads lasted 19k but then again I drove a long way to work at reasonably slow speeds so they werent getting worn, this present set isnt likely to last as long.

If youve not changed the pads early and the pads been scrapping agaist the disk them youll need to change them you cannot resurface Clio disks.

regards cost though you cna get new pads for £20 and new disks very cheap (have a look at GSF site) I think there £30 each so all new pads and disks will cost you less than £80.

Changing them is very simple even if you havnt done it before you can do them in under an hour a side.

I think Fred from here can get you uprated disks and pagid Pads for about 70-80 quid and they wont cost that much to fit, , Where abouts you from

Pads are £20 at Halfords.

The pads and disks are the same as fitted to the Williams and 1.8 16V s

Quick fit will always try and sell you stuff you dont need, get them checked out elsewhere. I had them try and sell me new full suspension when all I wanted was a quote for my exhaust and it wasnt needed.

11000 miles for discs is rubbish. I doubt you need them that soon. My VTS gets harsh braking but Im only about to replace them on 37k miles. (Ive had it since 24k but as far as I know theyve not been replaced, but even then thats 13000 of hard braking.

I took it to Kwikfit last year when they were squealing (but I wantred them to check the general condition too), he said Id only stop that with new discs and pads but I needed them anyway. I took it to another garage and he told me that was crap and just told me to get some copper grease and smear it all over the backs (non friction surface) of the pads and that sorted it, did it myself.

I will take it down to Halfords then, he told me my pads were OK but you cant replace disks without replacing pads, is that right??

Also those uprated discs would invalidate my insurance would they not??

Well the brakes are making a really horrible grinding sound and he told me to run my fingers down them, they dont feel smooth at all and he said that is whats making the noise. The braking itself is fine, just the noise. I need a mechanic I can trust who will be honest, not someone just after a bit of extra work.

If they are scored then chances are the pads will be the same but in reverse if you like.

I would get pads and discs of they are as bad as that. Usually you can get pads on there own as they wear quicker than discs but when its discs time, its best to get both.

The discs could even be warped slightly causing noise. £130 for discs and pads, fitted is ok. Discs usually cost about £50 a pair and pads £30 (both cheapish varities) and fitting is about an hour at the very tops.
