New gearbox at 26000 miles

Droped the 182 off to renault this morning, looks like the gear box is shot.
When you press the clutch down at idle there is a strange grinding noise ( have been told clutch bearing). But since i booked it in for this the box has developed a "loud whine" in 3rd 4th and 5th gears and generally sounds horrible.
So i now have a 06 astra they gave me for a week till they sort it.
Has anybody else had problems with boxes or are they just weak?

The only prob I've got with mine is when you've been going for a few mile and put in fifth gear you get like a little screatch from it for a second dont know what that is,
But like the fella above said give the Astra a good tow, Bet it will be like getting blood out of a stone getting performance out of an Astra

I will be the first to admit i dont drive it slow but 26000, reminds me of my old vts ...a gearbox every other year. Thought they would be stronger.
The astra is a 1.6 twinpoint ..... looks horible, handles like a boat, but i have to say engine is ok for the size of the car and i like the dash.
Wouldnt want to keep it to long though.

I had issues at 28k with an oil seal, although the gearbox itself was/is (i hope still) in very good condition.

Ummmmmm, gets me worried does this, i do limited milage and doubt il make it to 26k before the warrenty ends!!! :dapprove:

Should imagine one to be just as pricey as when my valver went......Difference being that one lasted 90 odd thousand miles before it needed a newun!!! Lol

Hmmm, maybe pushing them to the rev limiter all the time isn't such a good idea afterall. Eh? ;)

Nothing to do with the limiter, bad design of box is mostly to blame, coupled with some aggressive driving.

Ghey, my 1.2 on 34k and no trouble touch wood. Been spot on since I got it 2 years ago. If I was going for a hot hatch, would have to be Civic Type R even if the 182s etc are as quick...

^^^Good call but the 182 is still the better car whilst under warrenty imo. Doesnt stop me contmeplating weather to sell next year though for the stronger and more reliable car even if its just for piece of mind.

I think it all depends on how hard you drive it and have to say its running slighty more power than standard (194bhp). On my 3rd set of tyres and its due for 3rd set of pads on the front. Saying that though surly being a sport it should be designed to be driven hard.

This is bad news to me. I had a R19 16v a few years back, i had two boxes in it in 1 year(recons).Got rid of it and swore i'd never touch reno again but i fell for the cs and thought that the boxes would be stronger after 5years of improvements...Seems not eh?!

the box in your 19 is similar to that found in the RS

I can't say as I have ever had any problems with a Renault gear box (have owned four Renaults now) and I don't drive like a little old lady , nor do I thrash the b****cks off it. Infact I would say that so far ~touches wood~ all the Renaults I have owned have been darn good little cars (even the one Hubby owned before me that was severely abused ). Hence why I love them so much. ;)

It seems the frogs can't make a strong enough box for there engines. A box should last the life of the engine in my opinion. Is it still engine out job to change box and clutch like it was on the 19 and old clio?

never broken a gear box, not on my old track day Saxo VTS, or the 182, which has seen some abuse (18k, 2 trips to 'ring, numerous track days).

cant help but think some people dont have any mechanical sympothy for parts!

possibly worth a check of your driving style?
