New member looking to buy...

Evening boys and girls,

I have signed up hoping to post a "Wanted" ad, but to no avail. As is also the case with Clio197/200.net, it doesn't appear you can post in the Wanted section as a new, or at least unpaying, user. Which seems a little backward, but hey ho - I don't make the rules.

On another note, this board has also fallen out of favour straight away as not one, but two little scrote's have stolen my username, forcing me to add an unsightly "R27" after my preferred tagline. I wouldn't mind so much but, after a little digging, I have discovered lowercase-godders has only made a single post, back in 2007. Meanwhile uppercase-Godders hasn't contributed at all! (Please note I have already checked that neither of them were old accounts of mine that I had forgotten about... that would have been embarrassing)

Anyway, I digress. I have recently just sold a stupid MX5, some of you may recognise it. It had some rather unsubtle appendages and a big turbo under the bonnet...

I am currently on the look out for a new daily driver, which will take over from my PH3 Peugeot 306 Rallye, which will also be for sale shortly...

I think I may want a Clio, in 197 flavour. After originally hankering for an R26 Megane, I now think I prefer the idea of a Clio. I had a poke around a couple of them side by side today, and the Clio just felt a little more special. Smaller, nimbler and a bit more... Fun. Lets be honest, it is basically a newer version of my Peugeot, so I think I'd feel quite at home in one.

Welcome I saw your mx5 at the NEC.. Knuckles I would go for an R26 over the 197 in fact I'd go for a 1*2 over the 197. Only thing I'd have an 197 for is the shell and stick an R26 engine and box in.

just so you know the ly 197 only came in R27 spec so as a minimum you will get cup chassis and recaros -

desirable options are as you mentioned:
Climate
xenons or projector lights
aero kit

also the clio 200 black speedlines look epic-

watch out for
worn out recaros - £200 a seat to retrim
gearboxes
steering racks

and check the cambelt has been done by a specialist

where are you? If you're in Cheshire I'd be happy to show you my car and take you out. And I'm sure Chi has/had/will have a Megane somewhere that he'd take you out in.

but if I had to choose, it'd be the meg. The only reason I have the clio was insurance at the time.

All things considered, I would love a 197 with a Meg engine in it. I have my eye's peeled for one of them coming up in the classifieds too! Unfortunately I think my chances are very slim...

Really appreciate the offer, but I am absolutely no where near Cheshire! I am in Swindon, Wiltshire. I will see if I can find the car you mention on the 'bay. I generally try and avoid the place when buying cars though...

I am still not dead set against a Meg, but I just felt more at home in the Clio. I also intend to do a bit of track work with it and from what I have read the Clio is definitely more suited to that than a Megane.

Knuckles, the only LY I can find on ebay is one that is in Haverhill, which I have actually messaged the owner about. Not sure that is the one you are thinking of though?

i wouldn't pay £7k for that one in Haverhill.

dodgy retrim on the seats, cracked side skirt, missing centre caps, destickered, melted steering weel, after market HU, carbon vinyl, no xenons or climate etc etc

and how the hell do you get rust on it?!

also, pet peeve but I'm sure there was 132 in ly, it's s annoying when people use the number off as a selling point... Then get the number wrong

Thankfully most of the issues I would be able to rectify fairly easily as I work in a bodyshop. I imagine the rusty tailgate is due to a poorly fitted replacement screen, it is a little unusual though!

The steering wheel is to be expected isnt it? And at least the seat bolster is all in one piece unlike most of the ones I have seen!

The lack of CC and xenons could be a deal breaker though...

Still, I certainly wouldn't be paying full whack for it.

thats handy, but still, for £7k I wouldn't want to be putting things right. I paid £8k for mine and it was mint bar two budget front tyres.

the steering wheel melt, yeah but not to that severity. Mine has a little bit but that is down to steering poorly while on a long commute, in the summer... Always hold your wheel properly haha.

the seat bolster is a very rare sight yeah, normally they're chewed through. That bit at the top, where they stitched around 'renaultsport' would do my head in though.


the cc and xenons is just me being picky, I'm of the mindset, "if I'm spending this much, I want it to be the best it can be"

you ou can retrofit projectors, but not the xenons with the cornering lights as it's a different loom and doesn't have washer jets. Cc I think you'd be hard pushed to retrofit.
